1642 - Abel Tasman discovered Van Diemen's land, which was later renamed Tasmania.

1784 - Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States, was born in Orange County, Virginia.

1859 - Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" was published, which explained his theory of evolution by means of natural selection.

1865 - Mississippi became the first Southern state to enact laws which came to be known as “Black Codes” aimed at limiting the rights of newly freed Blacks; other states of the former Confederacy soon followed.

1871 - The National Rifle Association was incorporated.

1874 - Joseph Farwell Glidden patented barbed wire.

1947 - A group of writers, producers and directors that became known as the "Hollywood 10" was cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions about alleged Communist influence in the movie industry.

1954 - The first Air Force One presidential plane was christened.

1963 - Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, in the garage of Dallas police headquarters in a scene captured on live television.

1969 - Apollo 12 returned to Earth after the second manned mission to the moon.

1971 - Hijacker D.B. Cooper parachuted from a Northwest Airlines 727 over Washington state with $200,000 in ransom.

1974 - The bone fragments of a 3.2 million-year-old hominid were discovered by scientists in Ethiopia; the skeletal remains were nicknamed "Lucy".

1985 - The hijacking of an Egyptair jetliner parked on the ground in Malta ended violently as Egyptian commandos stormed the plane. Fifty-eight people died in the raid, in addition to two others killed by the hijackers.

1987 - The United States and Soviet Union agreed to scrap shorter- and medium-range missiles in the first superpower treaty to eliminate an entire class of nuclear weapons.

1989 - Czechoslovakia's hard-line party leadership resigned after more than a week of protests against its policies.

1991 - Rock singer Freddie Mercury of Queen died at age 45 from pneumonia brought on by AIDS.

1995 - Voters in Ireland narrowly approved a constitutional amendment legalizing divorce.

2000 - The U.S. Supreme Court stepped into the bitter, overtime struggle for the White House, agreeing to consider George W. Bush's appeal against the hand recounting of ballots in Florida.

2010 - A jury in Austin convicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) on charges he illegally funneled corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002. (DeLay’s convictions were overturned on appeal.)

2014 - It was announced that a grand jury in St. Louis County, Missouri, had decided against indicting Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown; the decision enraged protesters who set fire to buildings and cars and looted businesses in the area where Brown had been fatally shot.

2015 - In a show of Western solidarity, President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande met at the White House, where they vowed to escalate airstrikes against the Islamic State and bolster intelligence sharing following the deadly attacks in Paris.

2019 - Billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg formally launched a Democratic bid for president. (Bloomberg would end his campaign in early March.)

2019 - With multiple wins at the American Music Awards, Taylor Swift surged past Michael Jackson’s record of 24 wins at the awards show, based on fan votes.

1892 - Nebraska and Cockeye play to a 10-10 tie to end the season at 2-2-1 and finish as runner-up in the Western Inter-State University Football Association.

1898 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 6-5; NU ends the season with a 8-3 record.

1899 - South Dakota defeats Nebraska 6-5.

1904 - Nebraska defeats Illinois 16-10 and ends the season with a 7-3 record.

1906 - Chicago defeats Nebraska 38-5.

1910 - Nebraska defeats Haskell 119-0 to end the season at 7-1 and champions of the Missouri Valley Conference.

1921 - Nebraska defeats Colorado State 70-7 to end the year at 7-1 and champions of the Missouri Valley Conference.

1923 - Syracuse defeats Nebraska 7-0.

1927 - Nebraska defeats New York University 27-18 to end the season at 6-2 and runner-up in the Missouri Valley.

1928 - Army defeats Nebraska 13-3.

1932 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 21-6 to win the Big 6 title (5-0).

1934 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 13-6.

1945 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 13-6 to end the season at 4-5 and in fourth place in the Big 6 (2-3).

1951 - #12 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 27-0 to finish in fourth place in the Big 7 (2-4).

1956 - Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 54-6 to end the year at 4-6 and in fourth place in the Big 7 (3-3).


1960 - Wilt Chamberlain (Philadelphia Warriors) set an NBA record with 55 rebounds against the Boston Celtics.

1962 - #10 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 34-6 to finish in 3rd place in the Big 8 (5-2).

1964 - Notre Dame quarterback John Huarte wins the Heisman Trophy.

1966 - Oklahoma upsets #4 Nebraska 10-9; Huskers still win the Big 8 title at 6-1.

1970 - Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1996 - Rusty Wallace won the first NASCAR event to be held in Japan.

1996 - Clyde Drexler of the Houston Rockets became the 24th player in NBA history to record 20,000 career points.

2000 - #10 Nebraska defeats Colorado 34-32 to finish as runner-up in the Big 12 North (6-2).

2002 - The Montreal Alouettes beat the Edmonton Eskimos 25-16 to win the Grey Cup.

2006 - #19 Nebraska defeats Colorado 37-14 to finish as Big 12 North Division champion (6-2) and advance to the Big 12 title game.

2013 - The Saskatchewan Roughriders defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 45-23 to win their fourth Grey Cup.

2017 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 56-14; NU ends the season at 4-8 overall and in fifth place in the Big Ten West (3-6).
