1642 - Abel Tasman discovered Van Diemen's land, later renamed Tasmania.

1784 - Zachary Taylor, the 12th president of the United States, was born in Orange County, Virginia.

1859 - Charles Darwin published his On the Origin of Species, which explained his theory of evolution by means of natural selection.

1871 - The National Rifle Association was incorporated.

1874 - Joseph Farwell Glidden patented barbed wire.

1941 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in Edwards v. California, unanimously struck down a California law prohibiting people from bringing impoverished non-residents into the state.

1947 - A group of writers, producers and directors that became known as the "Hollywood 10" was cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions about alleged Communist influence in the movie industry.

1963 - Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, in the garage of Dallas police headquarters in a scene captured live on national television.

1969 - Apollo 12 returned to Earth after the second manned mission to the moon.

1971 - D.B. Cooper parachuted from a Northwest Airlines flight over Washington state with $200,000 in ransom money; his fate remains unknown.

1974 - The bone fragments of a 3.2 million-year-old hominid were discovered by scientists in Ethiopia; the skeletal remains were nicknamed "Lucy".

1987 - The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to scrap shorter- and medium-range missiles in the first superpower treaty to eliminate an entire class of nuclear weapons.

1989 - Czechoslovakia's hard-line party leadership resigned after more than a week of protests against its policies.

1991 - Rock singer Freddie Mercury of Queen died at age 45 of pneumonia brought on by AIDS.

2000 - The U.S. Supreme Court stepped into the bitter, overtime struggle for the White House, agreeing to consider George W. Bush’s appeal against the hand recounting of ballots in Florida.

2010 - A jury in Austin convicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, on charges he'd illegally funneled corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002.

2012 - Fire raced through a garment factory in Bangladesh that supplied major retailers in the West, killing 112 people; an official said many of the victims were trapped because the eight-story building lacked emergency exits.

2014 - It was announced that a grand jury in St. Louis County, Missouri, had decided against indicting Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown; the decision enraged protesters who set fire to buildings and cars and looted businesses in the area where Brown had been fatally shot.

2020 - Pennsylvania officials certified Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential vote in the state; the Trump campaign had gone to court trying to prevent the certification. The Nevada Supreme Court made Biden’s win in the state official. County election workers across Georgia began an official machine recount of the roughly 5 million votes cast in the presidential race in the state; certified results had shown Biden winning in Georgia by 12,670 votes.

1892 - Nebraska and Cockeye play to a 10-10 tie; NU ends the season with a 2-2-1 record.

1898 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 6-5; NU ends the season at 8-3.

1899 - South Dakota defeats Nebraska 6-5.

1904 - Nebraska defeated Illinois 16-10, ending the season at 7-3.

1906 - Chicago defeats Nebraska 38-5.

1910 - Nebraska defeats Haskell 119-0 to end the year at 7-1 and champions of the Missouri Valley (2-0).

1921 - Nebraska defeated Colorado State 70-7 to end the year at 7-1 and champions of the Missouri Valley (3-0).

1923 - Syracuse defeats Nebraska 7-0.

1927 - Nebraska defeats New York U. 27-18 to end the year at 6-2 and as Missouri Valley runner-up (4-1).

1928 - Army defeats Nebraska 13-3.

1956 - Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 54-6; NU ends the season at 4-6 and 3-3 (4th) in the Big 7.


1960 - Wilt Chamberlain (Philadelphia Warriors) set an NBA record with 55 rebounds against the Boston Celtics.

1962 - #10 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 34-6; Huskers finish in 3rd place in the Big 8 (5-2).

1964 - Notre Dame quarterback John Huarte wins the Heisman Trophy.

1966 - Oklahoma defeats #4 Nebraska 10-9; Huskers still win the Big 8 with a 6-1 record.

1970 - Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1976 - The Atlanta Hawks end a 28-game road losing streak in the NBA.

1979 - #8 Oklahoma defeats #3 Nebraska 17-14; Huskers finish as Big 8 runner-up (6-1).

1991 - Monica Seals set a female tennis record by winning $2,457,758 in a year.

1995 - #1 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 37-0 to win the Big 8 title with a 7-0 record.

1996 - Barry Sanders (Detroit Lions) set an NFL record when he recorded his eighth straight 1,000-yard season.

1996 - Clyde Drexler (Houston Rockets) became the 24th NBA player to record 20,000 career points.

2000 - #10 Nebraska defeats Colorado 34-32; finishes as runner-up in the Big 12 North (6-2).

2006 - #19 Nebraska defeats Colorado 37-14 to win the Big 12 North with a 6-2 record.


2011 - In the first NFL game featuring brothers as opposing head coaches, the Baltimore Ravens, led by John Harbaugh, beat the San Francisco 49ers, 16-6, under rookie coach Jim Harbaugh.

2012 - The continued NHL lockout results in all games through December 14 being cancelled.

2017 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 56-14; NU ends the season at 4-8 and 3-6 (5th) in the Big Ten West.
