1804 - Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire.

1889 - The first jukebox was installed at the Palais Royal Saloon in San Francisco.

1914 - The seven month U.S. military occupation of Veracruz, Mexico ended.

1936 - The first issue of Life magazine hit the newsstands. The cover photograph, by Margaret Bourke-White, featured the Fort Peck Dam.

1943 - During World War II, the United States seized control of the Tarawa and Makin atolls from the Japanese.

1945 - U.S. wartime rationing of meat, butter and other foods came to an end.

1954 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average finally surpassed its pre-Great Depression crash high -- 25 years after Black Tuesday -- when it closed at 382.74.

1963 - President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed November 25 a day of national mourning following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

1971 - The People's Republic of China was seated as a member of the U.N. Security Council.

1980 - A series of earthquakes devastated southern Italy, killing nearly 2,600 people.

1996 - A commandeered Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 crashed into the water off the Comoros Islands, killing 125 of the 175 people on board, including all three hijackers.

2000 - In a setback for Al Gore, the Florida Supreme Court refused to order Miami-Dade County officials to resume hand-counting its election day ballots. Meanwhile, Gore's lawyers argued in a brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court that the high court should stay out of the Florida election controversy.

2001 - The U.N. war crimes tribunal said it would try former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic for genocide in Bosnia, linking him for the first time in court to the murders of thousands of non-Serbs and the displacement of a quarter million people. (Milosevic died in March 2006 while his trial was in progress.)

2001 - An Israeli helicopter fired two missiles at a van in the West Bank, killing Mahmoud Abu Hanoud, a leading member of the Islamic militant Hamas group.

2006 - Former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko died in London from radiation poisoning after making a deathbed statement blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin.

2011 - Yemen's authoritarian President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed to step down amid a fierce uprising to oust him after 33 years in power.

2015 - The White House urged its allies to step up their contributions to the campaign against the Islamic State, as President Barack Obama faced pressure to show the U.S.-led coalition would intensify efforts even without a major shift in strategy.

2016 - President-elect Donald Trump selected two Republican women who’d had unflattering things to say about him during the campaign: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and charter school advocate Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education.

1896 - Nebraska defeats Nebraska Wesleyan 28-0.

1907 - Nebraska defeats Doane 85-0.

1912 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 13-9 to finish the year at 7-1 and as champions of the Missouri Valley Conference (2-0).

1918 - Camp Dodge defeats Nebraska 23-7.

1929 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 10-6.

1940 - #8 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 21-12.

1946 - #18 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 27-6. NU finishes in third place in the Big 6 (3-2).


1947 - Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins passes for six TDs against the Chicago Cardinals in a 45-21 win.

1957 - Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 32-7. NU ends the season at 1-9 overall and in last place in the Big 7 (1-5).

1963 - #10 Nebraska defeats #6 Oklahoma 29-20 to win the Big 8 with a 7-0 league record.


1965 - USC running back Mike Garrett wins the Heisman Trophy.

1967 - #5 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 21-14. Nebraska finishes in a fifth-place tie in the Big 8 (3-4).

1968 - #14 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 47-0. NU ends the season at 6-4 overall and in fourth place in the Big 8 (3-4).


1971 - The Washington Senators announced that they would now use the name Texas Rangers after their move to Arlington, Texas.

1972 - #4 Oklahoma defeats #5 Nebraska 17-14. NU still wins the Big 8 title (5-1-1).

1973 - #3 Oklahoma defeats #10 Nebraska 27-0 to finish as Big 8 runner-up (4-2-1).

1974 - #1 Oklahoma defeats #6 Nebraska 28-14 and finishes as Big 8 runner-up (5-2).


1984 - Boston College defeated Miami (FL) 47-45 on quarterback Doug Flutie's iconic last-second 64-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass.

1985 - #5 Oklahoma defeats #2 Nebraska 27-7. NU finishes as Big 8 runner-up (6-1).

1988 - Wayne Gretzky scored his 600th career NHL goal.

1990 - Oklahoma upsets #10 Nebraska 45-10. Nebraska ends in a third-place finish in the Big 8 (5-2).

1991 - The Sacramento Kings ended the NBA's longest road losing streak at 43 games.

1991 - BYU quarterback Ty Detmer sets NCAA records for most passing yards in a season (4,031) and career (15,031).

2001 - #14 Colorado defeats #2 Nebraska 62-36. Nebraska ends the regular season as Big 12 North Division co-champions (7-1).

2007 - Colorado defeats Nebraska 65-51 to end the season at 5-7 overall and in fifth place in the Big 12 North (2-6). It would be the final game coached by Bill Callahan at Nebraska.

2013 - Nebraska defeats Penn State 23-20 in overtime.

2018 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 31-28 to end the season at 4-8 overall and in fifth place in the Big Ten West (3-6).


2018 - Phil Mickelson claims a $9 million winner-take-all prize in a dramatic match play duel with Tiger Woods, finishing under floodlights in Las Vegas; the match went to the 22nd hole before Mickelson secured victory.

2019 - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph was fined $50,000 by the NFL for his involvement in a melee that began when Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett pulled off his helmet and hit him over the head with it. (In all, the league assessed more than $700,000 for discipline stemming from the brawl; Garrett was indefinitely suspended.)
