1497 - Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama became the first navigator to sail around the Cape of Good Hope in his search for a sea route to India.

1718 - Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard the pirate, was killed off the coast of North Carolina.

1842 - Mount St. Helens in Washington erupted, with ash fallout reaching as far as 48 miles away.

1906 - "S-O-S" was adopted as a distress signal at the International Radio Telegraphic Convention in Berlin.

1943 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek met in Cairo to discuss measures for defeating Japan.

1963 - President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Suspected gunman Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the nation's 36th president. Texas Gov. John B. Connally, who was riding in the same car with Kennedy, was seriously wounded in the attack.

1967 - The U.N. Security Council approved Resolution 242, which called for Israel to withdraw from territories it captured in 1967, and implicitly called on adversaries to recognize Israel's right to exist.

1975 - Juan Carlos was proclaimed king of Spain.

1977 - Regular passenger service between New York and Europe on the supersonic Concorde began on a trial basis.

2014 - A 12-year-old Black boy, Tamir Rice, was shot and mortally wounded by police outside a Cleveland recreation center after brandishing what turned out to be a pellet gun. (A grand jury declined to indict either the patrolman who fired the fatal shot or a training officer.)

2015 - Trying to reassure a nation on edge, President Barack Obama said in Malaysia that the Islamic State group “cannot strike a mortal blow” against the U.S., and he warned that overreacting to the Paris attacks would play into extremists’ hands.

2019 - After five long days of public impeachment hearings, President Donald Trump brushed off the probe as “total nonsense” and bad-mouthed a number of the U.S. diplomats who testified to Congress about his Ukraine pressure campaign.

2019 - The unveiling of Tesla’s electric pickup near Los Angeles went off-script when its supposedly unbreakable window glass splintered twice when hit with a large metal ball.

1895 - Grinnell defeats Nebraska 24-0.


1910 - Arthur F. Knight patented a steel shaft to replace wood shafts in golf clubs.

1913 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 12-0 to finish at a perfect 8-0 and Missouri Valley Conference champions.

1917 - The National Hockey League was officially formed in Montreal.

1924 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 24-0. to finish as Missouri Valley runner-up.

1930 - Cockeye defeats Nebraska 12-7.

1941 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 14-13.

1947 - Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 14-13. NU finishes in 4th place in the Big 6 (2-3).


1950 - The lowest-scoring game in the NBA was played, with the Fort Wayne Pistons defeating the Minneapolis Lakers 19-18.

1952 - #5 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 34-13. NU ends the season at 5-4-1 and in third place in the Big 7 (3-2-1).

1958 - #4 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 40-7. NU ends the year at 3-7 and in sixth place in the Big 7 (1-5).

1969 - #16 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 44-14 to win a co-Big 8 championship (6-1).

1975 - #7 Oklahoma defeats #2 Nebraska 35-10. NU ends as co-Big 8 champion (6-1).

1980 - #9 Oklahoma defeats #4 Nebraska 21-17. NU finishes as Big 8 runner-up (6-1).

1986 - #3 Oklahoma defeats #5 Nebraska 20-17. NU ends in third-place in the Big 8 (5-2).


1986 - Mike Tyson became the youngest to win the world heavyweight boxing crown at age 20 years and 4 months old.

1986 - Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers becomes the 13th player in NHL history to score 500 goals.

1991 - The New York Knicks give center Patrick Ewing a two-year contract extension worth a record $18.8 million.

2003 - The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in Edmonton in the first NHL game to be played outdoors.

2008 - The Montreal Canadiens retire Patrick Roy's #33.

2014 - Minnesota defeats #21 Nebraska 28-24.

2016 - It was announced that the NHL expansion team in Las Vegas would be named the Vegas Golden Knights.
