1620 - Peregrine White was born aboard the Mayflower in Massachusetts Bay; he was the first child born of English parents in present-day New England.

1789 - New Jersey became the first state to ratify the Bill of Rights.

1910 - Francisco Madero began an armed revolt against the president of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz.

1945 - The war crimes trials of 24 German World War II leaders began in Nuremberg, Germany. (Almost a year later, the International Military Tribunal sentenced 12 of the defendants to death; seven received prison sentences ranging from 10 years to life; the others were acquitted.)

1947 - The future Queen Elizabeth II married Philip Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh at Westminster Abbey in London.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy agreed to lift the American blockade of Cuba, ending the Cuban Missile Crisis.

1967 - The U.S. Census Bureau's Population Clock at the Commerce Department ticked past 200 million.

2003 - Record producer Phil Spector was charged with murder in the shooting death of an actor, Lana Clarkson, at his home in Alhambra, California. (Spector’s first trial ended with a hung jury in 2007; he was convicted of second-degree murder in 2009 and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.)

2009 - Holding back tears, Oprah Winfrey told her studio audience that she would end her talk show in 2011 after 25 years on the air.

2010 - In comments released by the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI opened the door on the previously taboo subject of condoms as a way to fight HIV, saying male prostitutes who used condoms might be beginning to assume moral responsibility.

2015 - Jonathan Pollard, a former U.S. Navy intelligence analyst, was released from prison after 30 years behind bars for spying for Israel.

2019 - Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, told House impeachment investigators that President Donald Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani explicitly sought a “quid pro quo” with Ukraine, leveraging an Oval Office visit for political investigations of Democrats; he said it was his understanding that the president was holding up nearly $400 million in military aid.

2019 - Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh was charged with fraud and tax evasion involving sales of her self-published children’s books to groups that did business with the government. (Pugh pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy and tax evasion charges and was sentenced to three years in prison.)

1915 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 52-7 to end the season with a perfect 8-0 record and winning the Missouri Valley Conference (4-0).

1920 - Nebraska defeats Michigan State 35-7.

1926 - Nebraska defeats New York University 15-7.

1937 - #11 Nebraska defeats Cockeye 28-0.


1942 - The National Hockey League (NHL) ended their regular season over-time until World War II was over.

1943 - Cockeye defeated Nebraska 33-13.

1948 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 33-6. NU ends in fifth place in the Big 7 (2-4).

1954 - #3 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 55-7. NU ends as Big 7 runner-up (4-2).

1988 - Boston College defeats Army 38-24 in the "Emerald Isle Classic" in Dublin, Ireland, the first NCAA football game to be played in Europe.

1997 - A.C. Green of the Dallas Mavericks sets an NBA record by playing in his 907th consecutive game.

1997 - Eric Lindros (Philadelphia Flyers) tried to bite Marty McSorley (San Jose Sharks).

2010 - Notre Dame returned to the Bronx for the first time in 41 years and sent the subway alumni home happy as the Irish defeated Army 27-3 in the first football game played at the new Yankee Stadium.
