1783 - General George Washington issued his Farewell Address to the Army near Princeton, New Jersey.

1861 - During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln relieved Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont of his command of the Army’s Department of the West based in St. Louis, following Fremont’s unauthorized efforts to emancipate slaves in Missouri.

1889 - North Dakota and South Dakota became the 39th and 40th states, respectively.

1917 - British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour issued a declaration expressing support for a “national home” for the Jews in Palestine.

1920 - White mobs rampaged through the Florida citrus town of Ocoee, setting fire to Black-owned homes and businesses, after a Black man, Mose Norman, showed up at the polls to vote on Election Day; some historians estimate as many as 60 people were killed.

1947 - Howard Hughes flew the "Spruce Goose" on its first and only flight.

1948 - Harry S. Truman defeated Thomas E. Dewey to the surprise of pollsters and newspapers, in the greatest presidential upset in history.

1959 - "Twenty-One" game show contestant Charles Van Doren admitted that he had been given questions and answers in advance.

1976 - Jimmy Carter defeated Gerald Ford, becoming the first U.S. president from the deep south since the Civil War.

1984 - Velma Margie Barfield, a convicted murderer became the first woman to be executed since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976.

1994 - A jury in Pensacola, Florida, convicted Paul Hill of murder for the shotgun slayings of an abortion provider and his escort; Hill was executed in September 2003.

2000 - American astronaut Bill Shepherd and two Russian cosmonauts, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, became the first residents of the international space station.

2003 - V. Gene Robinson was consecrated as bishop by the U.S. Episcopal Church, becoming the first openly gay bishop in the church.

2003 - In Iraq, insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter carrying dozens of U.S. soldiers, killing 16.

2004 - President George W. Bush was elected to a second term as Republicans strengthened their grip on Congress.

2007 - British college student Meredith Kercher, 21, was found slain in her bedroom in Perugia, Italy; her roommate, American Amanda Knox and Knox’s Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito,), were convicted of killing Kercher, but both were later exonerated. (Rudy Guede, a petty criminal who was convicted separately in the case, was released from prison in November 2021 after serving most of a 16-year sentence.)

2017 - Twitter reported that a customer support worker who was on his or her last day on the job had deactivated President Donald Trump’s Twitter account for a few minutes, resulting in an error message that the user “does not exist.”

2020 - In the closing hours of the presidential campaign, President Donald Trump charged across the nation delivering an incendiary but false allegation that the election was rigged, while Democrat Joe Biden pushed to claim states that were once seen as safely Republican.

1901 - Wisconsin defeated Nebraska 18-0.

1907 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 10-9.

1912 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 7-0.

1920 - Nebraska defeats Rutgers 28-0.

1929 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 12-6.

1935 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 19-6.


1938 - It was announced that George Herman "Babe" Ruth had applied for the job of Manager of the St. Louis Browns after being released as a coach from the Brooklyn Dodgers.

1940 - #12 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 13-0.

1946 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 21-20.

1957 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 14-12.

1963 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 13-12.

1968 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 24-13.

1974 - #9 Nebraska defeats Colorado 31-15.


1974 - The Atlanta Braves trade home run king Hank Aaron to the Milwaukee Brewers.

1985 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 41-3.

1985 - Tulsa's Gordon Brown (214) and Steve Gage (206) set NCAA football record for combined rushing yards in one game for 2 teammates who gained more than 200 yards each in 42-26 win at Wichita State.

1990 - Golden State Warriors register a 162-158 win over the Denver Nuggets at McNichols Arena, with the 320 total points setting an NBA record for most points scored by 2 teams in a non-overtime game.

1991 - Nevada makes biggest comeback in NCAA football history, overcoming a 35 point 3rd quarter deficit to rally and beat Weber State, 55-49.

1991 - #9 Nebraska and #15 Colorado play to a 19-19 tie.

1992 - Magic Johnson retired from the NBA again, this time for good because of fear due to his HIV infection.

1996 - #5 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 73-21.

1997 - Eric Metcalf (San Diego Chargers) set an NFL record when he ran back two kicks for touchdowns. The two returns gave him the league record with 10 in his career.

2002 - #7 Texas defeats Nebraska 27-24.

2012 - The New York City Marathon was canceled when Mayor Michael Bloomberg reversed himself and yielded to mounting criticism that it was no time to be running a race in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

2013 - Nebraska defeats Northwestern 27-24.

2016 - The Chicago Cubs defeated the Cleveland Indians in seven games to win their first World Series championship since 1908.

2019 - Purdue defeats Nebraska 31-27.

2021 - The Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros in six games to win their first World Series since 1995.
