1703 - A masked man held prisoner in the Bastille in Paris died. His true identity was the cause of much intrigue, and his story became the basis of the literary works by Francois Voltaire and Alexandre Dumas.

1794 - John Jay and Lord Grenville signed Jay's Treaty.

1831 - James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, was born in Orange, Ohio.

1863 - President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the national cemetery on the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

1919 - The U.S. Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles on a 55-39 vote.

1942 - Russian forces launched a winter offensive against the Germans along the Don front during World War II.

1959 - Ford Motor Co. announced it was halting production of the unpopular Edsel.

1969 - Apollo 12 astronauts Charles "Pete" Conrad and Alan Mean made man's second landing on the moon.

1977 - Egyptian President Anwar Sadat became the first Arab leader to visit Israel.

1985 - President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met for the first time in Geneva, Switzerland.

1990 - Milli Vanilli's Grammy Award was rescinded after it was discovered they didn't do their own singing.

1996 - The United States vetoed U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali’s bid for a second term.

1997 - Cockeye seamstress Bobbi McCaughey gave birth to the world's first surviving set of septuplets, four boys and three girls.

1998 - Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr laid out his evidence against President Bill Clinton during a daylong appearance before the House Judiciary Committee.

2001 - President George W. Bush signed legislation to put airport baggage screeners on the federal payroll.

2006 - The Nintendo Wii game console went on sale.

2007 - Amazon introduced the Kindle, an electronic book-reading device.

2010 - President Barack Obama, attending a NATO summit in Lisbon, Portugal, won an agreement to build a missile shield over Europe, a victory that risked further aggravating Russia.

2017 - Charles Manson, the hippie cult leader behind the gruesome murders of actor Sharon Tate and six others in Los Angeles in 1969, died in a California hospital at the age of 83 after nearly a half-century in prison.

2019 - Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a career Army officer on President Donald Trump’s National Security Council, testified about what he said was a clearly “improper” phone call in which Trump sought Ukrainian investigations of U.S. Democrats; Republicans responded by questioning Vindman’s loyalty to the United States.

2019 - Two jail guards who were supposed to be monitoring Jeffrey Epstein the night he killed himself were indicted on charges of falsifying prison records; prosecutors said the guards had been sleeping and browsing the internet instead of watching Epstein. (The guards are awaiting trial.)

1894 - Nebraska defeats Ottawa 6-0.

1895 - Nebraska defeats Doane 24-0.

1896 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 12-4.

1898 - Nebraska defeats Denver Athletic Club 11-10.

1904 - Nebraska defeats Bellevue 51-0.

1921 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 35-3.

1927 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 33-0.

1932 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 5-0.

1938 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye 14-0.

1949 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 25-14 to finish the season at 4-5 overall and in third place in the Big 7 (3-3).

1955 - #1 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 41-0. Huskers end the season at 5-5 and as Big 7 runner-up (5-1).

1960 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 17-14 to end the season at 4-6 and in sixth place in the Big 8 (2-5).


1979 - Nolan Ryan (Houston Astros) signed a four-year contract for $4.5 million. At the time, Ryan was the highest paid player in major league baseball.

1984 - Dwight Gooden (New York Mets), at 20 years old, became the youngest major league pitcher to be named Rookie of the Year in the National League.

1988 - #7 Nebraska defeats #9 Oklahoma 7-3 to win the Big 8 championship with a 7-0 league record.

1989 - The U.S. Men's National soccer team defeats Trinidad 1-0 to qualify for the 1990 World Cup; it was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the tournament since 1950.

1995 - Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks became the 23rd player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points.

1995 - The Baltimore Stallions defeat the Calgary Stampeders 37-20 to become the only American team to ever win the Grey Cup.

1996 - Albert Belle signed a five-year contract with the Chicago White Sox for a record $55 million. He was the first player to surpass the $10 million per year mark.

2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the first player to win four Most Valuable Player awards.

2004 - During a Detroit Pistons and Indian Pacers game a fight broke out involving fans and players. Several players were suspended and all involved were later charged with assault and battery.

2006 - The British Columbia Lions defeat the Montreal Alouettes 25-14 to win their fifth Grey Cup.

2011 - #20 Michigan defeats #17 Nebraska 45-17.

2015 - Bryce Harper, 23, became the youngest unanimous MVP winner in baseball history, capturing the NL award despite his Washington Nationals missing the playoffs; Josh Donaldson took the AL MVP, earning the honor after helping boost the Toronto Blue Jays back into the postseason for the first time since 1993.

2016 - #19 Nebraska defeats Maryland 28-7.

2018 - The Kansas City Chiefs defeat the Los Angeles Rams 54-51 in the third-highest scoring game in NFL history; it marked the first time in NFL history two teams scored 50 points in a game and Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes' six TD passes were the most in Monday Night Football history.

2019 - LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, with 25 points, 11 reounds and 10 assists in a 112-107 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, becomes the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double against all 30 NBA franchises.
