1820 - Captain Nathaniel Palmer discovered Antarctica.

1883 - Standard time began as the United States and Canada adopted a system of standard time zones.

1886 - Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, died in New York City at age 56.

1916 - The World War I Battle of the Somme pitting British and French forces against German troops ended inconclusively after 4 1/2 months of bloodshed.

1923 - Alan B. Shepard Jr., the first American in space, was born in East Derry, New Hampshire.

1928 - Mickey Mouse made his debut in the film Steamboat Willie.

1936 - Germany and Italy recognized the Spanish government of Francisco Franco.

1963 - The Bell System introduced the first commercial touch-tone telephone system in Carnegie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

1966 - U.S. Roman Catholic bishops did away with the rule against eating meat on Fridays.

1969 - Financier and diplomat Joseph P. Kennedy died in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts at age 81.

1976 - Spain's parliament approved a bill to establish a democracy after 37 years of dictatorship.

1978 - Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Cult members who refused to swallow the drink were shot; included in the deaths was U.S. Rep. Leo J. Ryan (D-California).

1985 - The comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes," created by Bill Watterson, was first published. (The strip ran for 10 years.)

1987 - The congressional Iran-Contra committees issued their final report, saying President Ronald Reagan bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing by his aides.

1988 - President Ronald Reagan signed legislation creating a Cabinet-level drug czar and providing the death penalty for drug traffickers who kill.

1991 - Shiite Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon freed Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite and Thomas Sutherland, the American dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut.

1999 - Twelve people were killed when a bonfire under construction at Texas A&M University collapsed.

1999 - A jury in Jasper, Texas convicted Shawn Allen Berry of murder for his role in the dragging death of James Byrd Jr., but spared him the death penalty.

2002 - U.N. weapons inspectors returned to Iraq after a four-year hiatus, calling on Saddam Hussein's government to cooperate with their search for weapons of mass destruction.

2003 - The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the right to same-sex marriage was guaranteed by the state constitution.

2004 - The U.N. Security Council held a two-day session in Nairobi, the first time the body had convened outside of its New York headquarters.

2004 - Britain outlawed fox hunting in England and Wales.

2009 - Two days before turning 92, Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-West Virginia), became the longest-serving lawmaker in congressional history, at 56 years, 320 days. (That record was broken in 2013 by U.S. Rep John Dingell, D-Michigan.)

2010 - President Barack Obama rallied former diplomatic and military chiefs from both parties to pressure reluctant Republican senators into ratifying a nuclear weapons deal with Russia. (The Senate ratified the treaty the following month.)

2010 - General Motors stock resumed trading on Wall Street, signaling the rebirth of an American corporate icon that had collapsed into bankruptcy and was rescued with a $50 billion infusion from taxpayers.

2015 - The Islamic State group announced that it had killed a Norwegian man and a Chinese man after earlier demanding ransoms for the two.

2019 - The Trump administration said it no longer considered Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be a violation of international law; the position marked a reversal of four decades of American policy, and undermined efforts by the Palestinians to gain statehood.

2019 - Beauty company Coty said it was buying a 51 percent share of reality TV star Kylie Jenner’s beauty business in a deal that valued her company at about $1.2 billion.

1899 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 36-20.

1905 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 35-0.

1911 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 29-0.

1916 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 7-3.

1922 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 21-0.

1933 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 6-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 14-13.


1943 - Philadelphia Phillies President William Cox was banned from baseball for betting on his team.

1950 - #18 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 20-13.

1951 - Chuck Connors (Los Angeles Angels) became the first player to oppose the major league draft. Connors later became the star of the television show "The Rifleman."

1961 - #8 Colorado defeats Nebraska 7-0.

1966 - Sandy Koufax announced his retirement from baseball.

1967 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 10-7.

1972 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 59-7.

1978 - Missouri upsets #2 Nebraska 35-31, Huskers end as co-Big 8 champions (6-1).


1984 - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 47-17 to win the Grey Cup.

1985 - Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins broke his leg after being hit by New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The injury ended Theismann's 12-year NFL career.

1987 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs is the first player to win a Most Valuable Player award while playing on a last-place team.

1989 - #6 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 42-25 and finishes as Big 8 runner-up (6-1).

1996 - Chris Boniol of the Dallas Cowboys tied an NFL record when he kicked seven field goals in a game against the Green Bay Packers.

1997 - The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays participated in their initial expansion draft.

2017 - #13 Penn State defeats Nebraska 56-44.
