1820 - Capt. Nathaniel Palmer discovered Antarctica.

1883 - The United States and Canada adopted a system of Standard Time zones.

1886 - Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States (1881-1885), died in New York at age 56.

1928 - Mickey Mouse made his debut in the animated film "Steamboat Willie."

1936 - Germany and Italy recognized the Spanish government of Francisco Franco.

1963 - The Bell System introduced the first commercial touch-tone telephone system in Carnegie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

1966 - U.S. Roman Catholic bishops did away with the rule against eating meat on Fridays outside of Lent.

1976 - Spain's parliament approved a bill to establish a democracy after 37 years of dictatorship.

1978 - Jim Jones, an American pastor and leader of the Peoples Temple, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Cult members who refused to swallow the drink were shot.

1987 - The congressional Iran-Contra committees issued their final report, saying President Ronald Reagan bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing by his aides.

1991 - Shiite Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon freed Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite and Thomas Sutherland, the American dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut.

1999 - Twelve people were killed when a bonfire under construction at Texas A&M University collapsed.

1999 - A jury in Jasper, Texas, convicted Shawn Allen Berry of murder for his role in the dragging death of James Byrd Jr., but spared him the death penalty.

2003 - The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the right to same sex marriage was guaranteed by the state constitution.

2004 - The U.N. Security Council held a two-day session in Nairobi, marking the first time the group had ever convened outside of its traditional New York headquarters.

2005 - Eight months after Robert Blake was acquitted at a criminal trial of murdering his wife, a civil jury decided the actor was behind the slaying and ordered him to pay Bonny Lee Bakley’s children $30 million.

2020 - President Donald Trump filed for a recount of Wisconsin’s two largest Democratic counties, paying the required $3 million cost and alleging that they were the sites of the “worst irregularities” although no evidence of illegal activity had been presented. (The recounts resulted in a slightly larger lead for Democrat Joe Biden.)

1916 - Kansas defeats Nebraska 7-3.

1922 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 21-0.

1933 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 6-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeats Pittsburgh 14-13.


1943 - Philadelphia Phillies President William Cox was banned from baseball for betting on his team.

1949 - Jackie Robinson (Brooklyn Dodgers) was named the National Leagues Most Valuable Player.

1950 - #18 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 20-13.

1961 - #8 Colorado defeats Nebraska 7-0.


1966 - Pitcher Sandy Koufax announced his retirement.

1967 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 10-7.

1972 - #5 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 59-7.

1978 - Missouri defeats #2 Nebraska 35-31.


1985 - Joe Theismann (Washington Redskins) broke his leg after being hit by Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants). The injury ended Theismann's 12 year NFL career.

1987 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player in MLB history to win a league MVP award while playing on a last-place team.

1989 - #6 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 42-25.

1996 - Chris Boniol (Dallas Cowboys) tied an NFL record when he kicked seven field goals against the Green Bay Packers.

2017 - #13 Penn State defeats Nebraska 56-44.

2021 - Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani was unanimously voted American League MVP for a hitting and pitching season not seen since Babe Ruth, and Bryce Harper earned the National League honor for the second time.
