1820 - Captain Nathaniel Palmer discovered Antarctica.

1883 - The United States and Canada adopted a system of standard time zones.

1886 - Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president of the United States, died in New York at age 56.

1928 - Mickey Mouse made his debut in the animated film "Steamboat Willie."

1936 - Germany and Italy recognized the Spanish government of Francisco Franco.

1963 - The Bell System introduced the first commercial touch-tone telephone system in Carnegie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

1966 - U.S. Roman Catholic bishops did away with the rule against eating meat on Fridays.

1969 - Financier and diplomat Joseph P. Kennedy died in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, at age 81.

1976 - Spain's parliament approved a bill to establish a democracy after 37 years of dictatorship.

1978 - Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Cult members who refused to swallow the drink were shot.

1987 - The congressional Iran-Contra committees issued their final report, saying President Ronald Reagan bore "ultimate responsibility" for wrongdoing by his aides.

1988 - President Ronald Reagan signed legislation creating a Cabinet-level drug czar and providing the death penalty for drug traffickers who kill.

1991 - Muslim kidnappers in Lebanon freed Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite and Thomas Sutherland, the American dean of agriculture at the American University of Beirut.

1999 - Twelve people were killed when a bonfire under construction at Texas A-and-M University collapsed.

1999 - A jury in Jasper, Texas, convicted Shawn Allen Berry of murder for his role in the dragging death of James Byrd Jr., but spared him the death penalty.

2002 - U.N. arms inspectors returned to Iraq after a four-year hiatus, calling on Saddam Hussein's government to cooperate with their search for weapons of mass destruction.

2003 - The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the right to same sex marriage was guaranteed by the state constitution.

2004 - Former President Bill Clinton’s library opened in Little Rock, Arkansas; in attendance were President George W. Bush and former presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

2004 - The U.N. Security Council held a two-day session in Nairobi; it was the first time the group had ever convened outside their New York headquarters.

2009 - Two days before turning 92, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-West Virginia, became the longest-serving lawmaker in congressional history, at 56 years, 320 days.

2016 - President-elect Donald Trump signaled a sharp policy shift to the right by picking Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions as attorney general, Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo to head the CIA and Michael Flynn as his national security adviser.

2020 - President Donald Trump filed for a recount of Wisconsin’s two largest Democratic counties, paying the required $3 million cost and alleging that they were the sites of the “worst irregularities” although no evidence of illegal activity had been presented. (The recounts resulted in a slightly larger lead for Democrat Joe Biden.)

1899 - Kansas defeated Nebraska 36-20.

1905 - Minnesota defeated Nebraska 35-0.

1911 - Nebraska defeated Kansas 29-0.

1916 - Kansas defeated Nebraska 7-3.

1922 - Nebraska defeated Kansas State 21-0.

1933 - Pittsburgh defeated Nebraska 6-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeated Pittsburgh 14-13.


1943 - Philadelphia Phillies President William Cox was banned from baseball for betting on his team.

1949 - Jackie Robinson (Brooklyn Dodgers) was named the National Leagues Most Valuable Player.

1950 - #18 Nebraska defeated Cockeye State 20-13.

1951 - Chuck Connors (Los Angeles Angels) became the first player to oppose the major league draft. Connors later became the star of the television show "The Rifleman."

1961 - #8 Colorado defeated Nebraska 7-0.

1966 - Sandy Koufax (Los Angeles Dodgers) announced his retirement from major league baseball.

1967 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 10-7.

1972 - #5 Nebraska defeated Kansas State 59-7.

1978 - Missouri upset #2 Nebraska 35-31.


1985 - Joe Theismann (Washington Redskins) broke his leg after being hit by Lawrence Taylor (New York Giants). The injury ended Theismann's 12 year NFL career.

1987 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs becomes the first player on a last-place team to earn an MVP award.

1989 - #6 Nebraska defeated Oklahoma 42-25.

1996 - Chris Boniol (Dallas Cowboys) tied an NFL record when he kicked seven field goals against the Green Bay Packers.

1997 - The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays participated in their initial expansion draft.

2017 - #13 Penn State defeated Nebraska 56-44.

2020 - The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Georgia freshman guard Anthony Edwards with the No. 1 pick in the delayed NBA draft.
