1558 - Queen Elizabeth I of England ascended to the throne upon the death of her half-sister Queen Mary.

1800 - Congress met in Washington, D.C. for the first time, in the partially completed Capitol building.

1869 - The Suez Canal opened in Egypt, linking the Mediterranean and Red seas.

1889 - The Union Pacific Railroad Co. began direct, daily railroad service between Chicago and Portland, Oregon, as well as Chicago and San Francisco.

1911 - The historically African-American fraternity Omega Psi Phi was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

1934 - Lyndon B. Johnson married Claudia Alta Taylor, better known as "Lady Bird".

1962 - Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. was dedicated.

1969 - The first round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks between the United States and the Soviet Union opened in Helsinki, Finland.

1970 - The Soviet Union landed an unmanned, remote-controlled vehicle on the moon.

1973 - President Richard Nixon told an Associated Press managing editors meeting in Orlando, Florida that "people have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook."

1979 - Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the release of 13 Black and/or female American hostages being held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

1989 - The "Velvet Revolution" began, which led to the downfall of communism in Czechoslovakia.

1997 - Six militants opened fire at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, Egypt, killing 62 people, most of them foreign tourists. The attackers were killed by police.

2003 - John Allen Muhammad was convicted of two counts of capital murder in the Washington-area sniper shootings. (He was later sentenced to death and executed.)

2003 - Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was sworn in as governor of California.

2010 - A hand-count of votes affirmed the re-election of U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), the first Senate candidate in over 50 years to win a write-in campaign.

2010 - House Democrats elected Nancy Pelosi to remain as their leader despite massive party losses in midterm elections. Republicans voted to keep John Boehner as their top House leader, making him speaker in the new Congress.

2010 - The first Guantanamo detainee to face civilian trial, Ahmed Ghailani, was convicted by federal jury in New York on one charge of conspiracy related to 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Ghailani's native Tanzania.

2015 - Republicans urged an immediate closure of America’s borders to Syrian refugees, drawing angry denunciations from President Barack Obama and other Democrats and igniting an emotional debate about U.S. values in the wake of the deadly Paris terror attacks.

2018 - Tribesman on the isolated island of North Sentinel, between India and Southeast Asia, were seen dragging and burying the body and American missionary John Allen Chau, who had reached the island the previous day despite a ban imposed by India's government.

2019 - Pushing back against accusations from President Donald Trump that the impeachment process had been stacked against him, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CBS that Trump was welcome to testify or answer questions in writing.

1917 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 13-3.

1923 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 26-14.


1926 - The Chicago Blackhawks made their NHL debut, defeating the Toronto St. Patrick's 4-1.

1928 - Nebraska and Pittsburgh play to a 0-0 tie.

1934 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 3-0.


1940 - The Green Bay Packers became the first NFL team to travel by plane.

1956 - Syracuse running back Jim Brown sets an NCAA record, scoring 43 points in a game against Colgate.

1968 - The "Heidi Bowl" incident occurred when NBC switched from live coverage of the end of a football to show the movie "Heidi". In the missing 42 seconds, the Oakland Raiders scored two touchdowns to secure a dramatic come-from-behind win over the New York Jets.

1973 - #10 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 50-21.

1979 - #3 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 34-3.


1981 - Bill Cartwright of the New York Knicks ties an NBA record when he goes 19-of-19 from the free throw line.

1984 - #4 Oklahoma defeats #1 Nebraska 17-7.

1991 - Mike Utley (Detroit Lions) suffered a spinal injury in a game against Los Angeles that left him paralyzed from the chest down.

1997 - Mario Lemieux was voted into the NHL Hall of Fame.

2003 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the first major league baseball player to win six National League MVP awards.

2012 - #16 Nebraska defeats Minnesota 38-14.

2018 - Nebraska defeats Michigan State 9-6.
