1864 - General Sherman and his troops began their "March to the sea" during the Civil War.

1907 - Oklahoma became the 46th state.

1914 - The newly created Federal Reserve Banks opened in 12 cities.

1933 - The United States and the Soviet Union established diplomatic relations.

1973 - President Richard Nixon signed a bill authorizing the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.

1988 - Benazir Bhutto was voted prime minister of Pakistan, the first woman to be elected to lead a Muslim-majority country.

1989 - Six Jesuit priests, a housekeeper and her daughter were slain by army troops at the University of Central America José Simeón Cañas in El Salvador.

2001 - Investigators found a letter addressed to Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont containing anthrax; it was the second letter bearing the deadly germ known to have been sent to Capitol Hill.

2001 - The first film in the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (U.S. title: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”) debuted in theaters around the world.

2004 - President George W. Bush nominated Condoleezza Rice to replace Colin Powell as Secretary of State.

2006 - Following midterm elections that saw Democrats take control of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi was nominated by the Democratic caucus to become speaker of the House. (Pelosi would officially become speaker by House vote the following January, becoming the first woman to serve in the role.)

2018 - A U.S. official said intelligence officials had concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

1924 - Cleveland Bulldogs lose, 12-7 to Frankford Yellow Jackets at Dunn Field; ends 31-game undefeated streak; NFL and major-league football record.
1926 - The New York Rangers played their first game in the NHL. They beat the Montreal Maroons 1-0.

1957 - Jim Brown (Cleveland Browns) set an NFL season rushing record of 1163 yards after only eight games.

1957 - Bill Russell (Boston Celtics) set an NBA record with 49 rebounds in a game against the Philadelphia Warriors.

1957 - The University of Oklahoma football team's NCAA record win streak is stopped at 47 games following a 7-0 loss to Notre Dame.

1958 - Bill Russell (Boston Celtics) set a new NBA record when he got 32 rebounds in the first half of a game.

1962 - Wilt Chamberlain of the San Francisco Warriors scores 73 points in a win over the New York Knicks.

1969 - President Nixon became the first president to attend a regular season National Football League (NFL) game while in office. The Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Redskins 41-28.

1982 - An agreement was announced on the 57th day of a strike by NFL players.

1984 - The Houston Rockets tie an NBA record with 20 blocked shots in a game against the Denver Nuggets.

1994 - Major League Soccer announced that it would start its inaugural season in 1996.

1997 - Morton Anderson (New Orleans Saints) became only the fifth player in NFL history to reach 1,600 career points when he kicked an extra point.

1998 - Roger Clemens (Toronto Blue Jays) became the first pitcher to win five Cy Young Awards.

2021 - A men's roller derby team in Cleveland settles their dispute with the city's Major League Baseball franchise, allowing the formerly known Indians to move forward with the name Guardians.

2023 - MLB owners unanimously approve the Oakland Athletics proposed move to Las Vegas, becoming the fourth different home for the franchise since it was established in 1901. (Philadelphia, Kansas City, Oakland).
