1736 - Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon began surveying the Mason-Dixon Line.

1777 - The Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation, the precursor to the U.S. Constitution.

1806 - Explorer Zebulon Pike spotted the mountaintop now known as Pike's Peak in present-day Colorado.

1864 - During the Civil War, Union forces led by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman began their "March to the Sea" from Atlanta; the campaign ended with the capture of Savannah on Dec. 21.

1926 - The National Broadcasting Co. debuted with a radio network of 24 stations.

1937 - At the U.S. Capitol, members of the House and Senate met in air-conditioned chambers for the first time.

1939 - The cornerstone of the Jefferson Memorial was laid by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington, D.C.

1940 - The first 75,000 men were called to armed forces duty under peacetime conscription.

1942 - The naval Battle of Guadalcanal ended during World War II with a decisive U.S. victory over Japanese forces.

1959 - A farmer, his wife and two of their children were found murdered in their home in Holcomb, Kansas -- a crime that was the subject of Truman Capote's non-fiction novel "In Cold Blood."

1966 - The flight of Gemini 12, the final mission of the Gemini program, ended successfully as astronauts James A. Lovell and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin splashed down safely in the Atlantic after spending four days in orbit.

1969 - More than 250,000 protesters against the Vietnam War, the largest war protest ever, converged peacefully on Washington, D.C.

1974 - The disaster movie "Earthquake" was released by Universal Pictures in "Sensurround," which bombarded the audience with low-frequency sound waves during the quake scenes.

1984 - An infant who had received a baboon's heart to replace her own congenitally deformed one died at a California medical center three weeks after the transplant.

1985 - Britain and Ireland signed an accord giving Dublin an official consultative role in governing Northern Ireland.

1988 - The Palestine National Council, the legislative body of the PLO, proclaimed the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

1993 - A judge in Mineola, New York sentenced Joey Buttafuoco to six months in jail for the statutory rape of Amy Fisher, who shot and wounded Buttafuoco's wife, Mary Jo.

2002 - Hu Jinato replaced Jiang Zemin as China's Communist Party leader.

2010 - A House ethics committee panel began closed-door deliberations on 13 counts of alleged financial and fundraising misconduct by U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-New York), who walked out of the proceeding after pleading unsuccessfully for more time to raise money for a lawyer. (Rangel was convicted the next day of 11 rules violations.)

2011 - Hundreds of police officers in riot gear raided the Occupy Wall Street encampment in New York City, evicting hundreds of protesters and then demolishing their tent city.

2015 - World leaders vowed a vigorous response to the Islamic State group’s terror rampage in Paris as they opened a two-day meeting in Turkey, with President Barack Obama calling the violence an “attack on the civilized world” and Russian President Vladimir Putin urging “global efforts” to confront the threat.

2019 - Former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, testified to House impeachment investigators about her removal from the post amid criticism from President Donald Trump's allies; as she testified, Trump tweeted fresh attacks on her, saying that things "turned bad" everywhere she served before he fired her.

2019 - Roger Stone, a longtime friend and ally of President Donald Trump, was convicted of all seven counts in a federal indictment accusing him of lying to Congress, tampering with a witness and obstructing the House investigation of whether Trump coordinated with Russia during the 2016 presidential election. (As Stone was about to begin serving a 40-month prison sentence, Trump commuted the sentence.)

1902 - Nebraska defeats Knox 7-0.

1913 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 9-0.

1919 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 19-7.

1924 - Notre Dame defeats Nebraska 34-6.

1930 - Nebraska and Missouri play to a 0-0 tie.

1941 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 14-7.

1952 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 13-7.

1958 - Nebraska upsets #14 Pittsburgh 14-6.


1960 - Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers scores 71 points in a game against the New York Knicks.

1969 - #17 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 10-7.

1975 - #2 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 52-0.

1980 - #4 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 35-0.


1983 - Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders records his 75th career hat trick.

1986 - #6 Nebraska defeats Kansas 70-0.

1992 - Richard Petty drives in the final race of his 35-year NASCAR career.

1997 - #3 Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 77-14.

1998 - Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions records his fifth straight 100-yard rushing game and 75th of his career.

2002 - Mike Modano (Dallas Stars) scored his 1,000th NHL point. He was only the 5th U.S.-born player to reach the milestone.

2003 - Kansas State defeats #18 Nebraska 38-9.

2005 - Major League Baseball players and owners agreed to tougher penalties for steroid use for the next season. The new rules called for a 50 game suspension for a first offense, 100 games for the second, a lifetime ban for a third, plus testing for amphetamines.

2007 - Baseball home run king Barry Bonds was indicted on charges related to grand jury testimony during which he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. (Bonds was later convicted on charges of obstruction of justice, however the conviction was overturned in 2015.)

2008 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 56-28.

2014 - #22 Wisconsin defeats #11 Nebraska 59-24.


2015 - Holly Holm defeats UFC Champion Ronda Rousey in an upset in Melbourne, Australia.

2017 - Three members of the UCLA men's basketball team detained in China on charges of shoplifting are released after a request made by President Donald Trump.

2018 - LeBron James passes Wilt Chamberlain into fifth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

2019 - The NFL suspended Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns for at least the rest of the season, after Garrett ripped off the helmet of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and struck him in the head with it.
