1620 - The Mayflower Compact was signed by Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower. It would provide the basis for all governments of the American colonies.

1831 - Former slave Nat Turner was executed.

1889 - Washington became the 42nd state.

1918 - At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the Allies and Germany signed an armistice that would bring an end to World War I.

1921 - The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated in Arlington National Cemetery.

1938 - Irish-born cook Mary Mallon, who’d gained notoriety as the disease-carrying “Typhoid Mary” blamed for the deaths of three people, died on North Brother Island in New York’s East River at age 69 after 23 years of mandatory quarantine.

1942 - During World War II, Germany completed its occupation of France.

1965 - Rhodesia proclaimed its independence from Britain.

1966 - Gemini 12 blasted off on a four-day mission with astronauts James A. Lovell and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. aboard; it was the tenth and final flight of NASA’s Gemini program.

1972 - The U.S. Army turned over its base at Long Binh to the South Vietnamese, symbolizing the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1987 - Following the failure of two Supreme Court nominations, President Ronald Reagan announced his choice of Judge Anthony M. Kennedy, who would go on to win confirmation.

1992 - The Church of England voted to ordain women as priests.

1998 - President Bill Clinton ordered warships, planes and troops to the Persian Gulf as he laid out his case for a possible attack on Iraq. Iraq, meanwhile, showed no sign of backing down from its refusal to deal with U.N. weapons inspectors.

2004 - Yasir Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, died in Paris at age 75. Mahmoud Abbas was elected to take his place.

2017 - The annual Pacific Rim summit stuck to its tradition of promoting free trade and closer regional ties, shrugging off the “America First” approach that was brought to the summit by President Donald Trump. After talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit, Trump told reporters that Putin had again insisted that Moscow had not interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections, and Trump said he believed Putin was sincere in making that claim; he accused Democrats of trying to sabotage relations between Washington and Moscow.

2020 - Georgia’s secretary of state announced an audit of presidential election results that he said would be done with a full hand tally of ballots because the margin was so tight; President-elect Joe Biden led President Donald Trump by about 14,000 votes out of nearly 5 million votes counted in the state. (The audit would affirm Biden’s win.)

2021 - A spokesman for his foundation confirmed that F.W. de Klerk, South Africa’s last apartheid leader, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela and oversaw the end of the country’s white minority rule, had died at 85.

1868 - The first indoor amateur track and field meet was held by the New York Athletic Club.

1893 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 30-18.

1899 - Nebraska defeats Drake 12-6.

1905 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 18-0.

1911 - Nebraska defeats Doane 27-0.

1922 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 28-0.

1933 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 12-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 7-0.

1944 - Cockeye State defeats Nebraska 19-6.


1944 - The New York Rangers set an NHL record of 25 games without a win (0-21-4).

1946 - The New York Knickerbockers (later the Knicks) played their first game at Madison Square Garden. New York lost the game 78-68 to Chicago.

1950 - #16 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 49-21.

1961 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 16-13.


1963 - Gordie Howe (Detroit Red Wings) tied Rocket Richard's record of 544 career goals.

1967 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 9-0.

1972 - #3 Nebraska and #17 Cockeye State play to a 23-23 tie.

1978 - #4 Nebraska defeats #1 Oklahoma 17-14.


1981 - Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first pitcher to win Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in the same season.

1981 - The Minnesota North Stars scored 8 goals in the second period against the Winnipeg Jets. The North Stars won the game 15-2.

1984 - The Houston Oilers ended their streak of 23 consecutive road losses when they beat Kansas City 17-16.

1989 - #6 Nebraska defeats Kansas 51-14.

1990 - Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs set an NFL record with seven sacks in a game against the Seattle Seahawks.

1995 - #1 Nebraska defeats #10 Kansas 41-3.

1997 - Roger Clemens (Toronto Blue Jays) became the third major league player to win the Cy Young Award four times.

1997 - NHL’s new Columbus franchise (scheduled to begin play in 2000) announce team’s name would be “Blue Jackets” after soldiers in the Union army during the American Civil War.

1997 - WNBA announces franchises in Detroit (Shock) and Washington D.C. (Mystics) would join the League as expansion teams for the 1998 season.

2000 - #16 Kansas State defeats #4 Nebraska 29-28.

2002 - Barry Bonds became the first major league baseball player to win the leagues Most Valuable Player title five times.

2002 - The NHL suspended Krzysztof Oliwa (New York Rangers) for five games for a cross-check against Grant Marshall (Columbus Bluejackets) on November 9. Coach Bryan Trottier (New York Rangers) was suspended for two games for sending several enforcers on the ice for the final 2.5 seconds of the same game.

2006 - Nebraska defeats #24 Texas A&M 28-27.

2017 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 54-21.
