1620 - The Mayflower Compact was signed by the Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower. It would provide the basis for all governments of the American colonies.

1831 - Former slave Nat Turner was executed in Jerusalem, Virginia after having led a violent slave uprising.

1889 - Washington became the 42nd state.

1918 - The Allies and Germany signed an armistice ending World War I on the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month".

1921 - The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery by President Warren G. Harding.

1929 - The Ambassador Bridge spanning the Detroit River between Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was dedicated.

1942 - During World War II, Germany completed its occupation of France.

1965 - Rhodesia proclaimed independence from Britain.

1966 - Gemini 12 blasted off on a four-day mission with astronauts James A. Lovell and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin aboard; it was the tenth and final flight of NASA's Gemini program.

1972 - The U.S. Army turned over its base at Long Binh to the South Vietnamese army, symbolizing the end of direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1987 - Following the failure of two Supreme Court nominations, President Ronald Reagan announced his choice of Judge Anthony M. Kennedy, who went on to win confirmation.

1992 - The Church of England voted to ordain women as priests.

1998 - Israel's Cabinet narrowly ratified a land-for-peace agreement with the Palestinians.

1998 - President Bill Clinton ordered warships, planes and troops to the Persian Gulf as he laid out his case for a possible attack on Iraq. Iraq, meanwhile, showed no sign of backing down from its refusal to deal with U.N. weapons inspectors.

2000 - Republicans went to court seeking an order to block manual recounts from continuing in Florida's presidential election.

2004 - Yasir Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, died in Paris at age 75. Mahmoud Abbas was elected to take his place.

2010 - A disabled Carnival Splendor cruise liner inched into San Diego Bay after three nightmarish days adrift in the Pacific, bringing cheers from passengers who described trying to pass the time with limited food, backed-up toilets and dark cabins.

2010 - A dispute between the U.S. and China over currency values overshadowed a meeting of Group of 20 nations in Seoul, South Korea.

2015 - The world's two largest beer makers, AB InBev and SABMiller, announced they would join forces in a $107 billion merger to create a company that would produce almost a third of the world's beer.

2019 - A day after stepping down amid election fraud allegations, former Bolivian President Evo Morales said he was headed for Mexico; his supporters and foes clashed on the streets of the Bolivian capital following his resignation. (Morales would settle in Argentina; he said after his party’s victory in October elections that he planned to return to Bolivia.)

2019 - SpaceX launched 60 mini satellites from a Falcon rocket; they joined 60 others that had been launched in May.

1893 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 30-18.

1899 - Nebraska defeats Drake 12-6.

1905 - Nebraska defeats Colorado 18-0.

1911 - Nebraska defeats Doane 27-0.

1922 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 28-0.

1933 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 12-0.

1939 - Nebraska defeats Kansas 7-0.

1944 - Cockeye State defeats Nebraska 19-6.


1944 - The New York Rangers set an NHL record of 25 games without a win (0-21-4).

1946 - The New York Knickerbockers (Knicks) played their first game at Madison Square Garden, losing to the Chicago Stags 78-68 in overtime.

1950 - #16 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 49-21.

1961 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 16-13.


1963 - Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings tied Maurice "Rocket" Richard's NHL record of 544 career goals.

1967 - Nebraska defeats Oklahoma State 9-0.

1972 - #3 Nebraska and #17 Cockeye State play to a 23-23 tie.

1978 - #4 Nebraska defeats #1 Oklahoma 17-14.


1981 - Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first major league pitcher to win both Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award in the same season.

1981 - The Minnesota North Stars scored eight goals in the second period of a 15-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

1984 - The Houston Oilers snapped a 23-game road losing streak with a 17-16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

1989 - #6 Nebraska defeats Kansas 51-14.

1990 - Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs set an NFL record when he recorded seven sacks in a game against the Seattle Seahawks.

1995 - #1 Nebraska defeats #10 Kansas 41-3.

1997 - Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays became the third player in major league history to win four Cy Young Awards.

1997 - The WNBA announces expansion franchises Detroit Shock and Washington Mystics for the 1998 season.

2000 - #16 Kansas State upsets #4 Nebraska 29-28.

2002 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants became the first player in MLB history to win the MVP award five times.

2002 - The NHL suspended Krzysztof Oliwa (New York Rangers) for five games for a cross-check against Grant Marshall (Columbus Bluejackets) on November 9. Coach Bryan Trottier (New York Rangers) was suspended for two games for sending several enforcers on the ice for the final 2.5 seconds of the same game.

2004 - Shaquille O'Neal of the Miami Heat scored his 22,000th career point.

2006 - Nebraska defeats #24 Texas A&M 28-27.

2017 - Minnesota defeats Nebraska 54-21.
