1775 - The United States Marine Corps is organized under authority of the Continental Congress.

1871 - Journalist and explorer Henry Stanley found the missing David Livingstone in Central Africa and made his famous comment, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

1919 - The American Legion opened its first national convention in Minneapolis.

1928 - Hirohito is crowned emperor of Japan.

1944 - During World War II, the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11) exploded while moored at the Manus Naval Base in the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific, leaving 45 confirmed dead and 327 missing and presumed dead.

1951 - The first long distance telephone call without operator assistance took place.

1954 - The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, depicting the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in Arlington, Virginia.

1969 - "Sesame Street" premiered on PBS.

1970 - The Great Wall of China opened to the world for tourism.

1975 - The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution equating Zionism with racism (the world body repealed the resolution in Dec. 1991).

1982 - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial opened in Washington, D.C.

2009 - John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks that killed 10 in the Washington, D.C. region, was executed.

2012 - Two people were killed when a powerful gas explosion rocked an Indianapolis neighborhood, damaging or destroying more than 80 homes. (Five people were later convicted of charges in connection with the blast, which prosecutors said stemmed from a plot to collect insurance money.)

2017 - President Donald Trump arrived in Vietnam to attend an international economic summit, telling CEOs on the sidelines of the summit, “We are not going to let the United States be taken advantage of anymore.”

2021 - Kyle Rittenhouse took the stand in his murder trial, testifying that he was under attack and acting in self-defense when he shot and killed two men and wounded a third during a turbulent night of street protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin. (Rittenhouse would be acquitted of all charges.)

2021 - A judge in Michigan approved a $626 million settlement for Flint residents and others who were exposed to lead-contaminated water; most of the money would come from the state.

2021 - The government said prices for U.S. consumers jumped 6.2% in October compared with a year earlier, leaving families facing their highest inflation rate since 1990.

1928 - Knute Rockne made his famous "win one for the Gipper" pep talk during halftime of a tied game between Notre Dame and Army.

1934 - Armand Mondou (Montreal Canadiens) was awarded the first penalty shot in the NHL. George Hainsworth (Toronto) stopped the shot.

1934 - Pittsburgh defeats Nebraska 25-6.

1945 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 24-0.


1945 - #1 Army defeats #2 Notre Dame 48-0.

1951 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 34-27.

1990 - The Phoenix Suns set an NBA record when they scored 107 points in the first half of a game against the Denver Nuggets. Phoenix won the game 173-143.

1991 - Martina Navratilova tied Chris Evert's record of 157 career titles.

1996 - Dan Marino (Miami Dolphins) became the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 50,000 yards.

2001 - #2 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 31-21.

2007 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 73-31.

2012 - #18 Nebraska defeats Penn State 32-23.
