1483 - Martin Luther, leader of the Protestant Reformation, was born in Eisleben, Germany.

1766 - Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, had its beginnings as William Franklin, the Royal Governor of New Jersey, signed a charter establishing Queen's College in New Brunswick.

1775 - The United States Marine Corps was organized under the authority of the Continental Congress.

1871 - Journalist and explorer Henry Stanley found the missing David Livingstone in Central Africa and made his famous comment, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

1919 - The American Legion opened its first national convention in Minneapolis.

1928 - Hirohito was crowned emperor of Japan.

1938 - Kate Smith first sang Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" on network radio.

1942 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, discussing the recent victory over Rommel at El Alamein, Egypt, said "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

1944 - During World War II, the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11) exploded while moored at the Manus Naval Base in the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific, leaving 45 confirmed dead and 327 missing and presumed dead.

1951 - The first long distance telephone call without operator assistance took place with a call between the mayors of Englewood, New Jersey and Alameda, California.

1954 - The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, depicting the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, was dedicated in Arlington, Virginia.

1969 - Sesame Street premiered on PBS.

1970 - The Great Wall of China opened to the world for tourism.

1975 - The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution equating Zionism with racism. (The resolution was repealed in 1991.)

1975 - The ore-hauling ship Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm on Lake Superior. All 29 crew members died.

1982 - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial opened in Washington, D.C.

1982 - Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev died at age 75.

1997 - A judge in Cambridge, Massachusetts reduced Louise Woodward's murder conviction to manslaughter and sentenced the English au pair to time served in the death of 8-month-old Matthew Eappen.

1997 - WorldCom Inc. and MCI Communications Corp. agreed to a $37 billion merger.

2001 - The World Trade Organization approved China's membership.

2009 - John Allen Muhammad, mastermind of the 2002 sniper attacks that killed 10 people in the Washington, D.C. area, was executed.

2010 - President Barack Obama cut short his visit to his boyhood home in Indonesia because of an ash cloud from Mount Merapi.

2010 - French President Nicolas Sarkozy's reform raising the retirement age from 60 to 62 became law, a victory for the conservative government and a defeat for unions that had waged massive strikes and street protests.

2018 - President Donald Trump, in France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, canceled a visit to a cemetery east of Paris where Americans killed in that war are buried; rainy weather had grounded the presidential helicopter.

2019 - Bolivian President Evo Morales resigned under mounting pressure from the country's military and public after his re-election victory triggered weeks of fraud allegations and deadly protests.
