1478 - The Spanish Inquisition was established.

1512 - Michelangelo's paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were shown to the public for the first time by the artist's patron, Pope Julius II.

1604 - William Shakespeare's tragedy "Othello" was first presented at Whitehall Palace in London.

1755 - An earthquake and the resulting fires and tsunami leveled the city of Lisbon and killed more than 70,000 people.

1765 - The Stamp Act, the first direct tax on the American colonies, went into effect, prompting stiff resistance from colonists.

1861 - During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln named Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan General-in-Chief of the Union armies, succeeding Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott.

1870 - The U.S. Weather Bureau made its first meteorological observations.

1936 - Benito Mussolini described the new alliance between Nazi Germany and Italy as an "axis" running between Berlin and Rome.

1950 - Two Puerto Rican nationalists tried to force their way into Blair House in Washington, D.C. in a failed attempt to assassinate President Harry S. Truman. (One of the pair was killed, along with a White House police officer.)

1952 - The United States detonated the first hydrogen bomb in a test in the Marshall Islands.

1989 - East Germany reopened its border with Czechoslovakia, prompting tens of thousands of refugees to flee to the West.

1991 - Clarence Thomas was sworn in as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court.

1993 - The Maastricht Treaty was enacted, establishing the European Union.

1995 - Bosnia peace talks opened in Dayton, Ohio, with the leaders of Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia present.

2007 - Less than a week after workers ratified a new contract, Chrysler announced 12,000 job cuts, or about 15 percent of its work force.

2012 - Israel, lifting a nearly 25-year veil of secrecy, acknowledged it had killed Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat’s deputy in a 1988 raid in Tunisia. (Khalil al-Wazir, who was better known by his nom de guerre Abu Jihad, founded Fatah, the dominant faction in the Palestine Liberation Organization.)

2021 - The global death toll from COVID-19 topped 5 million, as tallied by Johns Hopkins University.

1902 - Nebraska defeats Haskell 28-0.


1913 - Notre Dame defeated Army 35-13. It was the first time the forward pass was used as a main offensive weapon in football.

1913 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 18-9.

1919 - Cockeye State defeats Nebraska 3-0.

1924 - Nebraska defeats Missouri 14-6.


1924 - The Boston Bruins officially join the NHL, becoming the first U.S. franchise in the league; the Montreal Maroons also join (that team would fold in 1938).

1930 - Nebraska and Pittsburgh play to a 0-0 tie.

1938 - Seabiscuit, with George Woolf aboard, beats 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral by three lengths at Pimlico to win a $15,000 purse in what many consider one of the greatest match races in horse racing history.

1941 - Kansas State defeats Nebraska 12-6.

1946 - The first game of the Basketball Association of America (a forerunner of the modern NBA) is held, with the New York Knicks defeating the Toronto Huskies, 68-66.

1947 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 47-6.

1952 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 10-6.

1958 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 31-0.


1959 - Jacques Plante, of the Montreal Canadiens, became the first goalie in the NHL to wear a mask.

1964 - Jim Brown (Cleveland Browns) became the first NFL player to exceed 10,000 yards rushing.

1964 - Quarterback George Blanda of the Houston Oilers attempts an AFL record 68 passes (37 completions) in a 24-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

1966 - Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax becomes the first ever three-time Cy Young Award winner.

1966 - The NFL awards an expansion franchise to the New Orleans Saints.

1969 - Nebraska defeats #18 Colorado 20-7.

1970 - The New York Giants and New York Jets meet for the first time in a regular season NFL contest; the Giants won 22-10.

1975 - #3 Nebraska defeats #12 Missouri 30-7.

1980 - #8 Nebraska defeats #15 Missouri 38-16.


1982 - MLB owners vote to not renew the contact of Bowie Kuhn as commissioner, falling two votes shy. (Peter Ueberroth is eventually named to replace him.)

1986 - #9 Nebraska defeats Kansas State 38-0.

1987 - The New York Jets retire Don Maynard's #13.

1992 - New York Jets wide receiver Al Toon becomes the 10th player in NFL history to record a reception in 100 consecutive games.

1994 - The Chicago Bulls retire Michael Jordan's #23.

1997 - #1 Nebraska defeats Oklahoma 69-7.

1998 - Steve Young and Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers connect for their 80th career touchdown, eclipsing the previous NFL record held by the Miami Dolphins tandem of Dan Marino and Mark Clayton.

2000 - Pat Riley joins Lenny Wilkens as just the second coach in NBA history to accumulate 1,000 career victories.

2001 - Dan Neil (Denver Broncos) was fined $15,000 for an illegal block that broke the leg of Bryan Cox (New England Patriots).

2003 - Arkansas defeats Kentucky 71-63 in a seven overtime game, tying the NCAA record for longest game in college football history.

2003 - #16 Texas defeats #12 Nebraska 31-7.

2003 - John Gagliardi ties Eddie Robinson as college football's career victories leader with his 408th win, guiding Division III St. John's to a 15-12 win over St. Thomas.

2003 - University of Pittsburgh receiver Larry Fitzgerald establishes a new NCAA record with a touchdown reception in his 14th consecutive game.

2007 - Five-time Grand Slam tennis winner Martina Hingis admits testing positive for cocaine during Wimbledon; maintaining her innocence, she retires from tennis citing no desire to fight with anti-doping authorities.

2007 - Joe Torre, the winningest manager in MLB postseason history, moves from one storied franchise (New York Yankees) to another (Los Angeles Dodgers) on a 3-year, $13 million contract.

2008 - #4 Oklahoma defeats Nebraska 62-28.

2010 - The San Francisco Giants defeated the Texas Rangers in five games to win their first World Series since moving from New York in 1959.

2014 - #17 Nebraska defeats Purdue 35-14.

2015 - The Kansas City Royals defeat the New York Mets in five games to win their second World Series in franchise history.

2017 - The Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games to win their first World Series.
