1478 - The Spanish Inquisition was established.

1512 - Michelangelo's paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were shown to the public for the first time.

1755 - Earthquake, fires and a tsunami leveled Lisbon and claimed more than 70,000 lives.

1765 - The Stamp Act, the first direct tax on the American colonies, went into effect, prompting stiff resistance from American colonists.

1861 - Gen. George B. McClellan was made general-in-chief of the Union armies.

1870 - The U.S. Weather Bureau made its first meteorological observations.

1936 - Benito Mussolini described the new alliance between Nazi Germany and Italy as an "axis" running between Berlin and Rome.

1946 - Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II, was ordained as a priest in Poland.

1950 - Two Puerto Rican nationalists tried to force their way into Blair House in Washington to assassinate President Harry S. Truman; one of the assailants was killed.

2003 - Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean stirred controversy within his party by telling the Des Moines Register he wanted to be "the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks." (The former Vermont governor explained that he intended to encourage the return of Southern voters who had abandoned the Democrats for decades but were disaffected with the Republicans.)

2010 - Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, 61, was convicted by a jury in Erie, Pennsylvania, of participating in a bizarre plot in which a pizza delivery driver was forced to rob a bank wearing a metal bomb collar that later exploded, killing him. (Diehl-Armstrong was later sentenced to life in prison.)

2019 - House investigators called Energy Secretary Rick Perry to testify in the impeachment inquiry; he was the first Trump Cabinet member asked to appear before the House. (Perry failed to appear for the closed-door hearing.)

2019 - Chicago teachers and more than 300,000 students returned to classrooms following an 11-day strike.

2019 - Google announced it was buying Fitbit for $2.1 billion.

1902 - Nebraska defeated Haskell 28-0.

1913 - Nebraska defeats Cockeye State 18-9.


1913 - Notre Dame defeated Army 35-13 in a game that featured the forward pass used for the first time as a main offensive weapon in football.

1919 - Cockeye State defeated Nebraska 3-0.

1924 - The Boston Bruins officially join the NHL and become the first U.S.-based team to enter the league. The Montreal Maroons are also admitted to the league (the franchise would fold in 1938).

1924 - Nebraska defeated Missouri 14-6.

1930 - Nebraska and Pittsburgh played to a 0-0 tie.


1938 - Seabiscuit, with George Woolf aboard, beats 1937 Triple Crown winner War Admiral by three lengths at Pimlico track in record time to win a $15,000 purse in what is regarded as one of the greatest match races in horse racing history.

1941 - Kansas State defeated Nebraska 12-6.

1946 - The New York Knicks defeat the Toronto Huskies 68-66 in the first game of the Basketball Association of America.

1947 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 47-6.

1952 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 10-6.


1953 - Herb Thomas, driving his own No. 92 Hudson Hornet wraps up the NASCAR Grand National Championship with 14th-place in 100-mile finale at Atlanta's Lakewood Speedway; Thomas first repeat champion of the series.

1958 - Missouri defeated Nebraska 31-0.

1959 - Jacques Plante, of the Montreal Canadiens, became the first goalie in the NHL to wear a mask.

1964 - Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns became the first player in NFL history to exceed 10,000 yards rushing.

1964 - Houston Oilers quarterback George Blanda attempts an AFL record 68 passes (37 completions) in a 24-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

2003 - Arkansas defeats Kentucky 71-63 in seven overtimes, tying for the longest game in college football history.

2003 - John Gagliardi ties Eddie Robinson as college football's career victory leader with his 408th win, guiding Division III St. John's to a 15-12 victory over St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

2003 - University of Pittsburgh Larry Fitzgerald establishes a new NCAA record with a touchdown reception in his 14th straight game.
