1802 - Washington, D.C. was incorporated.

1898 - Israeli founder and prime minister Golda Meir was born Goldie Mabovitch in Kiev, Ukraine.

1921 - West Virginia imposed the nation's first state sales tax.

1937 - Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for "Gone With the Wind."

1947 - Japan’s postwar constitution took effect.

1948 - The Shelley v. Kraemer Supreme Court decision stated that it is unconstitutional for a court to enforce a restrictive covenant which prevents people of a certain race from owning or occupying property.

1971 - Anti-war protesters calling themselves the Mayday Tribe began four days of demonstrations in Washington, D.C., aimed at shutting down the nation's capital.

1971 - The National Public Radio program "All Things Considered" made its debut.

1979 - Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher was chosen to become Britain’s first female prime minister as the Tories ousted the incumbent Labour government in parliamentary elections.

1987 - The Miami Herald said its reporters had observed a young woman spending “Friday night and most of Saturday” at a Washington townhouse belonging to Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart. (The woman was later identified as Donna Rice; the resulting controversy torpedoed Hart’s presidential bid.)

1988 - The White House acknowledged that first lady Nancy Reagan had used astrological advice to help schedule President Ronald Reagan's activities.

1999 - Kansas and Oklahoma were hit by an outbreak of more than 55 tornadoes, including one which measured EF5 on the Fujita scale.

2001 - The United States, a member of the U.N. Human Rights Commission since its inception in 1947, lost its seat. (It would be restored the following year.)

2003 - New Hampshire's iconic "Old Man of the Mountain" collapsed in the state's Franconia Mountains.

2005 - Iraq's first democratically elected government was sworn in.

2006 - A federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, rejected the death penalty for al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, deciding he should spend life in prison for his role in 9/11; as he was led from the courtroom, Moussaoui taunted, “America, you lost.”

2009 - Mexican President Felipe Calderon told state television that a nationwide shutdown and an aggressive informational campaign appeared to have helped curtail an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

2010 - Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad was apprehended aboard a flight preparing to depart New York for Dubai.

2012 - U.S. officials published online a selection of letters from Osama bin Laden’s last hideaway; the documents portrayed a network that was weak, inept and under siege — and its leader seemingly near wit’s end about the passing of his global jihad’s supposed glory days.

2016 - In a stunning triumph for a political outsider, Donald Trump all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination with a resounding victory in Indiana that knocked rival Ted Cruz out of the race.

2017 - President Donald Trump met at the White House with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, promising “to do whatever is necessary” to forge an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

2018 - A federal grand jury in Detroit indicted former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn on charges stemming from the company’s diesel emissions cheating scandal. (Under Germany’s constitution, he could not be extradited to the U.S. to face charges.)

2021 - Bill and Melinda Gates said they were divorcing after 27 years of marriage; the Microsoft co-founder and his wife said they would continue to work together at the world’s largest private charitable foundation.

1910 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States is renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

1936 - Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio made his major league debut with the New York Yankees.

1951 - Gil McDougald (New York Yankees) became the fifth player to get 6 RBIs in an inning.

1970 - The New York Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1977 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Ricky Bell of USC with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1979 - Bobby Bonds of the Cleveland Indians becomes the second player in major league history with 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

1979 - The Buffalo Bills select Tom Cousineau of Ohio State with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1980 - Willie McCovey (San Francisco Giants) hit his 521st and final home run.

1980 - Ferguson Jenkins (Texas Rangers) became the fourth player to win 100 games in the American League and the National League.

1986 - At the age of 54, legendary horse jockey Bill Shoemaker became the oldest person to win the Kentucky Derby, riding Ferdinand to victory.

2007 - The Golden State Warriors defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6. It was the first time a No. 8 seed team had defeated a No. 1 seed team in a 7-game playoff series.

2011 - Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls became at age 22 the NBA’s youngest MVP.

2018 - Quarterback Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons becomes the first player in NFL history with a $30 million-per-year contract after signing a $150 million contract extension.
