1802 - Washington, D.C. was incorporated as a city.

1939 - Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for "Gone With the Wind."

1947 - Japan's post-war constitution took effect.

1948 - The Shelley v. Kraemer Supreme Court decision stated that it is unconstitutional for a court to enforce a restrictive covenant which prevents people of a certain race from owning or occupying property.

1960 - The Harvey Schmidt-Tom Jones musical “The Fantasticks” began a nearly 42-year run at New York’s Sullivan Street Playhouse.

1979 - Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher was chosen to become Britain’s first female prime minister as the Tories ousted the incumbent Labour government in parliamentary elections.

1987 - The Miami Herald said its reporters had observed a young woman spending “Friday night and most of Saturday” at a Washington townhouse belonging to Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart. (The woman was later identified as Donna Rice; the resulting controversy torpedoed Hart’s presidential bid.)

1999 - Kansas and Oklahoma were hit by an outbreak of more than 55 tornadoes, including one measured at EF5 on the Fujita scale.

2001 - The United States, a member of the U.N. Human Rights Commission since its inception, lost its seat. (It was restored the following year.)

2003 - New Hampshire's famous symbol, the granite Old Man of the Mountain, collapsed in the state's Franconia Mountains.

2006 - A federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, rejected the death penalty for al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaou, deciding he should spend life in prison for his role in 9/11; as he was led from the courtroom, Moussaoui taunted, “America, you lost.”

2009 - Mexican President Felipe Calderon told state television that a nationwide shutdown and an aggressive informational campaign appeared to have helped curtail an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico.

2015 - Two gunmen were shot and killed by a police officer in Garland, Texas, after they opened fire outside a purposely provocative contest for cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.

2016 - In a stunning triumph for a political outsider, Donald Trump all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination with a resounding victory in Indiana that knocked rival Ted Cruz out of the race.

2018 - A federal grand jury in Detroit indicted former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn on charges stemming from the company’s diesel emissions cheating scandal. (Under Germany’s constitution, he could not be extradited to the U.S. to face charges.)

1910 - The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States is renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

1936 - Joe DiMaggio (New York Yankees) made his major league debut. He got three hits.

1951 - Gil McDougald (New York Yankees) became the fifth player to get 6 RBIs in an inning.

1977 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select USC running back Ricky Bell with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1979 - The Buffalo Bills select Ohio State linebacker Tom Cousineau with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1979 - Bobby Bonds becomes the second player in MLB history with 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

1980 - Willie McCovey (San Francisco Giants) hit his 521st and final home run.

1986 - At the age of 54, legendary horse jockey Bill Shoemaker became the oldest to win the Kentucky Derby, riding Ferdinand to victory.

2007 - The Golden State Warriors defeated the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6. It was the first time a No. 8 seed team had defeated a No. 1 seed team in a 7-game playoff series.

2008 - Kent Desormeaux wins the Kentucky Derby aboard Big Brown by nearly five lengths; runner-up Eight Belles is euthanized on the track after fracturing both front ankles during the race, the first horse fatality in Derby history.

2011 - Chicago’s Derrick Rose became at age 22 the NBA’s youngest MVP.

2018 - Quarterback Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons becomes the first player in NFL history to sign a contract paying $30 million per year after agreement to a $150 million contract extension.
