1858 - Minnesota became the 32nd state.

1894 - Workers at the Pullman Palace Car Co. in Illinois went on strike. (The action spread and crippled railroad service nationwide before the federal government intervened to end the strike in July.)

1904 - Artist Salvador Dali was born in Figueras, Spain.

1910 - Glacier National Park in Montana was established.

1935 - The Rural Electrification Administration (REA) was created as one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs.

1943 - During World War II, U.S. forces landed on the Aleutian island of Attu, which was held by the Japanese; the Americans took the island 19 days later.

1946 - The first CARE packages, sent by a consortium of American charities to provide relief to the hungry of postwar Europe, arrived at Le Havre, France.

1947 - The B.F. Goodrich Co. of Akron, Ohio announced the development of a tubeless tire.

1949 - Israel was admitted to the United Nations.

1949 - Siam changed its name to Thailand.

1953 - A powerful tornado devastated Waco, Texas, claiming 114 lives.

1960 - Israeli agents captured Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Argentina.

1973 - Charges against Daniel Ellsberg for his role in the Pentagon Papers case were dismissed.

1981 - Reggae performer Bob Marley died of cancer in Miami at age 36.

1996 - A ValuJet DC-9 caught fire shortly after takeoff from Miami and crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing all 110 people on board.

1997 - IBM supercomputer Deep Blue defeated Garry Kasparov, the reigning world chess champion, in a six-game chess match (2 for Deep Blue, 1 for Kasparov, and 3 draws).

1998 - India detonated three underground atomic blasts, its first nuclear tests in 24 years.

1998 - A French mint produced the first coins of Europe's new single currency, the euro.

2003 - Lithuanian voters overwhelmingly approved to join the European Union, becoming the first former Soviet republic to do so.

2010 - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown resigned, ending 13 years of the Labour Party government, and was succeeded by Conservative leader David Cameron, who at age 43, became Britain's youngest prime minister in almost 200 years.

2016 - A white former South Carolina police officer already facing a state murder charge in the shooting death of Black motorist Walter Scott was indicted on federal charges including depriving the victim of his civil rights. (Michael Slager pleaded guilty to violating Scott’s civil rights and was sentenced to 20 years in prison; prosecutors agreed to drop the state murder charge.)

2016 - CBS News veteran Morley Safer, a “60 Minutes” correspondent for all but two of the newsmagazine’s 48-year history, announced his retirement (Safer died eight days later at age 84).

2020 - Twitter announced that it would add a warning label to tweets containing disputed or misleading information about the coronavirus.

1919 - Washington Senators star pitcher Walter Johnson threw 12 scoreless innings in a famous 0-0 duel with Jack Quinn of the New York Yankees at the Polo Grounds.

1959 - Yogi Berra (New York Yankees) ended his streak of 148 errorless games.

1963 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers throws his second career no-hitter.

1968 - The Montreal Canadiens sweep the St. Louis Blues to win the Stanley Cup.

1972 - The San Francisco Giants trade Willie Mays to the New York Mets for pitcher Charlie Williams and cash.

1972 - The Boston Bruins defeat the New York Rangers in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

1980 - Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies steals second, third and home in the same inning.

1985 - In Bradford, England, 56 people died when a fire engulfed the main grandstand at Bradford's soccer stadium. Over 200 were injured.

1996 - Al Leiter threw the first no-hitter in franchise history for the Florida Marlins in a 11-0 win over the Colorado Rockies.

2003 - Rafael Palmeiro of the Texas Rangers became the 19th player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs.

2015 - The NFL announced that quarterback Tom Brady of the New England Patriots would be suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2015-16 season for violating the NFL policy on the integrity of the game for his knowledge of under-inflated footballs after being checked by officials. It was also announced that the New England Patriots franchise would be fined $1 million and would forfeit a 2016 first round pick and a 2017 fourth round pick in the NFL Draft.
