1774 - Louis XVI ascended the throne of France.

1775 - Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga, New York from the British.

1863 - Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson died after being accidentally shot by his own troops.

1865 - Union forces captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Irwinville, Georgia.

1869 - The firs transcontinental railroad in the United States was completed with a ceremony driving a golden spike at Promontory Summit in Utah.

1899 - Actor-dancer Fred Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska.

1908 - The first Mother's Day observance took place during church services in Grafton, West Virginia, and Philadelphia.

1924 - J. Edgar Hoover was appointed director of the federal Bureau of Investigation -- a forerunner of the FBI -- a job he would hold until his death in 1972.

1933 - The Nazis staged massive public book burnings in Germany.

1940 - During World War II, German forces began invading the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and France.

1940 - Winston Churchill succeeded Neville Chamberlain as British prime minister.

1941 - Adolf Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess, parachuted into Scotland on what he claimed was a peace mission. (Hess ended up serving a life sentence at Spandau Prison until 1987, when he apparently committed suicide at age 93.)

1983 - The final episode of the sitcom "Laverne & Shirley" aired on ABC.

1994 - The state of Illinois executed convicted serial killer John Wayne Gacy for the murders of 33 young men and boys.

1994 - Nelson Mandela was sworn in as South Africa's first black president.

2002 - A 39-day standoff between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem ended with 13 suspected militants flown into European exile and 26 released into the Gaza Strip.

2003 - The New York Times announced that one of its reporters, Jayson Blair had "committed frequent acts of journalistic fraud."

2005 - Germany dedicated a national Holocaust memorial.

2008 - Jenna Bush, daughter of President George W. Bush, married Henry Hager at the Bush family ranch in Crawford, Texas.

2010 - President Barack Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.

2011 - The bulging Mississippi River rolled into the Mississippi Delta after cresting before daybreak at Memphis, Tennessee, causing widespread damage.

1946 - The Boston Red Sox won their 15th straight game.

1967 - Hank Aaron hits the only inside-the-park home run of his career in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1969 - The National Football League and the American Football League announced their plans to merge for the 1970-71 season.

1970 - The Boston Bruins swept the St. Louis Blues to win the Stanley Cup.

1973 - The New York Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship.

1973 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

1974 - The New York Nets defeat the Utah Stars in five games to win the ABA championship.

1993 - Bill Walton is inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

1997 - The Chicago Cubs record major league baseball's 68th triple play in a game against the San Francisco Giants.

2001 - Peter Forsberg (Colorado Avalanche) had his spleen removed in an emergency operation. The operation took place just hours after the Avalanche eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

2002 - The Anaheim Angels defeat the Chicago White Sox 19-0. The Angles join the 1923 Cleveland Indians, 1939 New York Yankees and 1950 Boston Red Sox as the only teams to defeat two opponents by 19 or more runs in the same season.

2016 - Stephen Curry became the first unanimous NBA MVP, earning the award for the second straight season after leading the defending champion Warriors to a record-setting season.

2018 - Rafael Nadal breaks John McEnroe's record for successive set wins on a single surface (49 on carpet) with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Diego Schwartzman at the Madrid Open (clay).
