1707 - The Act of Union joined England and Scotland to form Great Britain.

1915 - The RMS Lusitania set sail from New York, headed for Liverpool, England (it was torpedoed and sunk by Germany off the coast of Ireland six days later).

1931 - The Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 102 stories, it would be the world's tallest building for the next 41 years.

1941 - Orson Welles's Citizen Kane, considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made, premiered in New York.

1945 - A day after Adolf Hitler took his own life, Admiral Karl Doenitz effectively became sole leader of the Third Reich with the suicide of Hitler's propaganda minister, Josef Goebbels.

1948 - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established with Kim Il Sung as president.

1960 - The Soviet Union shot down an American U-2 reconnaissance plane over Soviet territory and captured its pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

1963 - James W. Whittaker became the first American to conquer Mount Everest as he and Sherpa guide Nawang Gombu reached the summit.

1967 - Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu. (They divorced in 1973.)

1971 - Amtrak went into service, combining and streamlining the operations of 18 intercity passenger railroads.

1992 - On the third day of the deadly Los Angeles riots, Rodney King appeared in public to appeal for calm, asking "Can we all get along?"

2003 - President George W. Bush made a speech aboard an aircraft carrier proclaiming "major combat operations in Iraq have ended."

2009 - Supreme Court Justice David Souter announced his retirement effective at the end of the court’s term in late June. (President Barack Obama chose federal judge Sonia Sotomayor to succeed him.)

2011 - President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States, was killed by U.S. forces in Pakistan. (Because of the time difference, it was May 2 local time in Pakistan.)

2011 - Pope Benedict XVI beatified Pope John Paul II, moving his predecessor one step closer to sainthood.

2015 - Baltimore’s top prosecutor charged six police officers with felonies ranging from assault to murder in the death of Freddie Gray, who’d suffered a spinal injury while riding in a police van.

2016 - After a half-century of waiting, Cuban-born passengers set sail from Miami on a historic cruise to Havana, the first such trip from the U.S. since recent policy changes.

2016 - Elephants performed for the last time at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Providence, Rhode Island.

2020 - U.S. regulators allowed emergency use of remdesivir, the first drug that appeared to help some COVID-19 patients recover faster.

1922 - Charlie Robertson (Chicago White Sox) pitched a perfect no-hit, no-run game against the Detroit Tigers. The Sox won 3-0. Another perfect game did not come along until 46 years later.

1926 - Satchel Paige made his pitching debut in the Negro Southern League.

1955 - Future Hall of Famer Bob Feller tosses his record 12th one-hitter in the Cleveland Indians' 2-0 win over the Boston Red Sox.

1965 - The Montreal Canadiens sweep the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1975 - Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Brewers broke baseball's all-time RBI record previously held by Babe Ruth.

1984 - The New England Patriots select Nebraska wide receiver Irving Fryar with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1984 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1984 NFL Draft: WR - Irving Fryar (1st round, 1st pick, New England Patriots); OT - Dean Steinkuhler (1st round, 2nd pick, Houston Oilers) and OT - Scott Raridon (6th round, Philadelphia Eagles).


1988 - After having scored 50 points in Game 1 of an NBA Eastern Conference playoff series, Michael Jordan scores 55 in the Chicago Bulls' 106-101 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2, becoming the first player in NBA history to score 50+ points in consecutive playoff games.

1991 - Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers, at age 44, threw the seventh and final no-hitter of his career in a 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

1991 - Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics stole his 939th base, breaking Lou Brock's career record.

1992 - Rickey Henderson stole his 1,000th career base.

1995 - The Montreal Canadiens miss the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 25 years.

2004 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants sets a major league record by being intentionally walked four times in a nine-inning game in a contest against the Florida Marlins.
