1618 - German astronomer Johannes Kepler devised his third law of planetary motion.

1702 - England's Queen Anne ascended the throne upon the death of King William III.

1782 - A peaceful settlement of Delaware Indians were massacred by militia at Gnadenhutten in Ohio in retaliation for raids carried out by other Indians.

1817 - The New York Stock & Exchange Board, which had its beginnings in 1792, was formally organized; it later became known as the New York Stock Exchange.

1841 - Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was born in Boston.

1874 - Millard Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States, died in Buffalo, New York at age 74.

1917 - The U.S. Senate voted to limit filibusters by adopting the cloture rule.

1917 - Russia's February Revolution, which eventually led to the overthrow of the csarist government, began.

1930 - William Howard Taft, the 27th president of the United States and a former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, died in Washington, D.C. at age 72.

1945 - Phyllis Mae Daley, the first African-American nurse to serve in World War II, received her U.S. Navy commission.

1948 - The U.S. Supreme Court, in McCollum v. Board of Education, struck down voluntary religious education classes in Champaign, Illinois public schools, saying the program violated separation of church and state.

1950 - The Soviet Union announced it had developed its own atomic bomb.

1965 - The first U.S. combat troops arrived in Vietnam.

1979 - Technology firm Philips demonstrated a prototype compact disc player during a press conference in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

1983 - President Ronald Reagan labeled the Soviet Union an "Evil Empire".

2004 - Iraq’s Governing Council signed a landmark interim constitution.

2008 - President George W. Bush vetoed a bill that would have banned the CIA from using simulated drowning and other coercive methods on suspected terrorists.

2011 - Voters in Bell, California, went to the polls in huge numbers and threw out the entire City Council after most of its members had been charged with fraud. (Residents were infuriated to find out that former City Manager Robert Rizzo had been receiving an annual salary of $1.5 million, and that four of the five City Council members had paid themselves $100,000 a year to meet about once a month.)

2014 - Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 with 239 people on board, vanished during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, setting off a massive and ultimately unsuccessful search.

2016 - Sir George Martin, the Beatles’ urbane producer who guided the band’s swift, historic transformation from rowdy club act to musical and cultural revolutionaries, died at age 90.

2020 - U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said communities would need to start thinking about canceling large gatherings, closing schools and letting more employees work from home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

1930 - The New York Yankees signed Babe Ruth to a two-year contract worth $160,000.

1936 - The first stock car race is held in Daytona Beach, Florida.

1954 - The Milwaukee Hawks and the Baltimore Bullets played the first double header in NBA history.

1966 - Casey Stengel is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1971 - Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali by decision at Madison Square Garden in New York in a 15-round decision in the first of three bouts between the legendary heavyweights. It was the first loss in Ali's professional career (32-1).

1986 - Martina Navratilova became the first woman tennis player to win more than $10 million in her career.

1999 - Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio died at age 84.

2004 - Todd Bertuzzi (Vancouver Canucks) hit Steve Moore (Colorado Avalanche) in the side of the head from behind and drove his head into the ice. Moore landed face-first with Bertuzzi on top of him. Moore suffered a broken neck, a concussion and deep cuts on his face. On March 11, the NHL suspended Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs and announced that his eligibility would be assessed the following season and would take into account Moore's health and the progression of his recovery.

2006 - NFL owners and the players' union agreed on a union proposal which extended the collective bargaining agreement for six years.

2019 - The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team files a federal gender discrimination lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation.
