1834 - The city of Toronto was incorporated.

1836 - The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, fell as Mexican forces led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna stormed the fortress after a 13-day siege; the battle claimed the lives of all the Texan defenders, nearly 200 strong, including William Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett.

1857 - The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Dred Scot v. Sandford that Scot, a slave, was not an American citizen and therefore could not sue for his freedom in federal court.

1912 - Oreo sandwich cookies were first introduced by the National Biscuit Co. (which later became Nabisco).

1930 - Clarence Birdseye started to sell pre-packaged frozen food for the first time, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

1933 - A nationwide bank holiday declared by President Franklin D. Roosevelt went into effect.

1935 - Retired Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. died two days shy of his 94th birthday.

1944 - Heavy bombers staged the first American raid on Berlin during World War II.

1957 - The former British colonies of Togoland and the Gold Coast united to form the independent nation of Ghana.

1970 - A bomb being built inside a Greenwich Village townhouse by the radical Weathermen accidentally went off, destroying the house and killing three group members.

1981 - Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," retired from the CBS Evening News and was replaced by Dan Rather.

1997 - Queen Elizabeth II launched the first royal website.

2002 - Independent Counsel Robert Ray issued his final report in which he wrote that former President Bill Clinton could have been indicted and probably would have been convicted in the scandal involving former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

2007 - Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was convicted of lying and obstructing an investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity.

2015 - During a town hall at South Carolina’s Benedict College, President Barack Obama said racial discrimination by police in Ferguson, Missouri, was “oppressive and abusive” as he called for criminal justice reform as part of the modern struggle for civil rights.

2016 - Former first lady Nancy Reagan died in Los Angeles at age 94.

2020 - The number of people infected by the coronavirus worldwide reached 100,000, with more than 3,400 dead. President Donald Trump signed a $8.3 billion measure to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak; it included money for vaccines, tests and potential treatments. Vice President Mike Pence said 21 people on a cruise ship being held off San Francisco had tested positive for the coronavirus.

1964 - Heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay officially changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

1972 - Jack Nicklaus passes Arnold Palmer as golf's all-time money winner.

1973 - Larry Hisle (Minnesota Twins) became baseball's first designated hitter. The spring-training exhibition game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1976 - American Dorothy Hamill wins the ladies world figure skating championship.

1976 - In his 10th title defense, WBA light welterweight champion Antonio Cervantes of Colombia is beaten by 17-year-old Puerto Rican boxer Wilford Benitez in a 15-round split decision in San Juan, Puerto Rico to become the youngest ever world champion.

1982 - National Basketball Association history was made when San Antonio beat Milwaukee 171-166 in three overtime periods to set the record for most points by two teams in a game. The record was beaten on December 13, 1983 by the Pistons and the Nuggets when they played to a final score of 186-184.

1983 - The United States Football League began its first season of pro football competition.

1985 - Future undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson knocks out Hector Mercedes 1:47 into the first round in his professional debut.

1997 - Mike Gartner (Phoenix Coyotes) scored his 30th goal of the season. He set a record for scoring 30 goals in a season for the 17th time in his career.

2019 - LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 32,293rd career point to pass Michael Jordan and move into fourth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
