1820 - President James Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise, which allowed Missouri to join the Union as a slave state and Maine to join as a free state, while banning slavery in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory.

1836 - The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas fell as Mexican forces led by Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna stormed the fortress after a 13-day siege; the battle claimed the lives of all the Texan defenders, including William Travis, James Bowie and Davy Crockett.

1857 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Dred Scott v. Sandford that Scott, an enslaved person, was not an American citizen and therefore could not sue for his freedom in federal court; it also ruled that slavery could not be banned from any federal territory. The decision deepened the national divide over slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War.

1869 - Chemist Dmitri Mendeleev introduced his concept of a periodic table of elements at a meeting of the Russian Chemical Society in St. Petersburg.

1912 - Oreo cookies were first introduced by the National Biscuit Company (now known as Nabisco).

1930 - Clarence Birdseye started to sell prepackaged frozen food for the first time, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

1951 - The trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg on federal espionage charges began in New York.

1957 - The former British colonies of Togoland and the Gold Coast united to form the independent nation of Ghana.

1970 - A bomb being built inside a Greenwich Village townhouse in New York by members of the leftist militant group Weather Underground accidentally exploded, destroying the house and killing three group members.

1981 - Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," retired as anchor of the CBS Evening News and was replaced by Dan Rather.

1964 - Heavyweight boxing champion Cassius Clay took on a new name, given to him by Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammed: Muhammad Ali.

1972 - Jack Nicklaus surpasses Arnold Palmer as golf's all-time money winner.

1973 - Larry Hisle (Minnesota Twins) became baseball's first designated hitter. The spring-training exhibition game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1982 - National Basketball Association history was made when San Antonio beat Milwaukee 171-166 in three overtime periods to set the record for most points by two teams in a game. The record was beaten on December 13, 1983 by the Pistons and the Nuggets when they played to a final score of 186-184

1983 - The United States Football League began its first season of pro football competition.

1985 - In his professional heavyweight debut, Mike Tyson knocks out Hector Mercedes in 1:47 in the first round.

1997 - Mike Gartner (Phoenix Coyotes) scored his 30th goal of the season. He set a record for scoring 30 goals in a season for the 17th time in his career.

2019 - LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 32,293rd career point, moving past Michael Jordan into fourth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.
