1770 - The Boston Massacre, a pre-Revolutionary incident that grew out of anger towards British troops, occurred; five anti-British rioters were killed.

1821 - President James Monroe is sworn in to a second term in office.

1849 - Zachary Taylor is sworn in as the 12th president of the United States.

1868 - The impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson began in the U.S. Senate with Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase presiding. Johnson, the first U.S. president to ever be impeached, was accused of "high crimes and misdemeanors" stemming from his attempt to fire Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. (The trial ended on May 26 with Johnson's acquittal.)

1877 - Rutherford B. Hayes is takes the oath of office as the 19th president of the United States.

1917 - President Woodrow Wilson is sworn into a second term in office.

1933 - In the last free elections in Germany until after World War II, the Nazi Party received 44% of the vote.

1946 - Winston Churchill delivered his famous "Iron Curtain" speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, saying, "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an Iron Curtain has descended across the continent, allowing police governments to rule Eastern Europe."

1953 - Soviet dictator Josef Stalin died at age 73 after 29 years in power.

1960 - Elvis Presley was discharged from the U.S. Army.

1963 - Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Hankshaw Hawkins were killed in a plane crash near Camden, Tennessee.

1970 - The nuclear non-proliferation treaty went into effect.

1977 - President Jimmy Carter took questions from 42 telephone callers in 26 states on a network radio call-in program moderated by Walter Cronkite.

1982 - Comedian John Belushi was found dead of a drug overdose at age 33.

1997 - North and South Korean representatives met for the first time in 25 years for peace talks.

1998 - NASA scientists said enough water was frozen in the loose soil of the moon to support a lunar base and perhaps, one day, a human colony.

2001 - Vice President Dick Cheney underwent an angioplasty for a partially blocked artery.

2003 - In a blunt warning to the United States and Britain, the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Russia said they would block any attempt to get U.N. approval for war against Iraq.

2004 - Martha Stewart was convicted of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she'd unloaded her Imclone Systems Inc. stock just before the price plummeted.

2006 - AT&T announced it was buying BellSouth Corp., a big step toward resurrecting the old Ma Bell telephone system.

2020 - The Senate passed and sent to the White House an $8.3 billion measure to help tackle the virus outbreak. (The only senator to vote against it, Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky, would later become the first senator to test positive for the virus.)

2020 - Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren ended her bid for the Democratic nomination for president after failing to finish higher than third place in any of the 18 states that had voted so far.

1973 - New York Yankee pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson announce that they had swapped wives.

1985 - Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders became the first player in NHL history to score 50 goals in eight consecutive seasons.

1993 - Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was banned from racing for life by the Amateur Athletic Association after testing positive for banned performance-enhancing substances for a second time.

1994 - Michael Adams of the Washington Bullets became the third player in NBA history to record 900 career 3-point field goals.

1996 - The Dallas Mavericks attempted 49 three-pointers for the fifth straight game.

1996 - Earl Weaver and Jim Bunning are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1997 - Tommy Lasorda, Nellie Fox and Willie Wells are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2009 - Moises Alou announces his retirement from baseball.
