1638 - Swedish colonists settled in present-day Delaware.

1790 - John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States, was born in Charles City County, Virginia.

1812 - The first White House wedding took place as Lucy Payne Washington, the sister of first lady Dolley Madison, married Supreme Court Justice Thomas Todd.

1848 - For the first time in recorded history, Niagara Falls stopped flowing. An ice jam on the Niagara River above the rim of the falls caused the water to stop.

1861 - President Abraham Lincoln ordered plans for a relief expedition to sail to South Carolina’s Fort Sumter, which was still in the hands of Union forces despite repeated demands by the Confederacy that it be turned over.

1867 - The North America Act was passed by the British Parliament creating the dominion of Canada.

1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered in Connecticut.

1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were found guilty of passing atomic secrets to the Russians and were sentenced to death. (They were executed in June 1953.)

1971 - Lt. William Calley was convicted of murdering 22 Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai massacre.

1971 - A jury in Los Angeles recommended the death penalty for Charles Manson and three female followers for the 1969 Tate-La Bianca murders. (The sentences were later commuted.)

1973 - The last U.S. troops left South Vietnam, ending America's direct military involvement in the Vietnam War.

1974 - Eight Ohio National Guardsmen were indicted on federal charges stemming from the shooting deaths of four students at Kent State University. (The charges were later dismissed.)

1992 - Democratic presidential front-runner Bill Clinton acknowledged experimenting with marijuana "a time or two" while attending Oxford University, adding, "I didn't inhale and I didn't try it again."

1999 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 10,000 for the first time, at 10,006.78.

2002 - Israel declared Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat an enemy and sent tanks and armored personnel carriers to fully isolate him in his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

2006 - Hamas formally took over the Palestinian government.

2017 - Britain filed for divorce from the European Union as Prime Minister Theresa May sent a six-page letter to EU Council President Donald Tusk.

2020 - President Donald Trump extended restrictive social distancing guidelines through April, bracing the nation for a coronavirus death toll that he acknowledged could exceed 100,000 people; Trump just days earlier had spoken about the country reopening in a few weeks. Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that the coronavirus could kill 100,000 to 200,000 Americans and that millions of Americans could become infected.

1929 - The first NHL Stanley Cup Final between two U.S.-based teams took place. The Boston Bruins beat the New York Rangers to get their first Stanley Cup title.

1941 - Wisconsin defeated Washington State 39-34 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1970 - Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded his 15th shutout. It was an NHL record for rookie goalies and the most shut outs in the modern era.

1973 - Bobby Clarke (Philadelphia Flyers) became the first NHL player from a post-'67 expansion team to score 100 points in a season.

1976 - Indiana defeats Michigan 86-68 to win the NCAA Tournament. It marked the first time that two teams from the same conference (Big Ten) had met in the title game.

1982 - North Carolina defeats Georgetown 63-62 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1984 - The NFL's Baltimore Colts relocate to Indianapolis.

1987 - WrestleMania III is held in Pontiac, Michigan. The event was headlined by Hulk Hogan defeating Andre the Giant to win the WWF Championship.

1987 - Tennessee defeats Louisiana Tech 67-44 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament.

1998 - Tennessee defeated Louisiana Tech 93-75 to win the NCAA Women's Tournament for a third consecutive year and set a record by finishing the season with a perfect 39-0 record.

1998 - WrestleMania XIV is held in Boston. The main event saw Stone Cold Steve Austin defeat Shawn Michaels to win the WWF Championship, a match that saw boxing superstar Mike Tyson serve as a "special outside enforcer".

1999 - Wayne Gretzky of the New York Rangers scored the last of his National Hockey League record 894 goals in a home game against the New York Islanders.

1999 - Connecticut defeats Duke 77-74 to win the NCAA Tournament.

2004 - The NHL approved the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers from Time Warner.

2013 - Jaromir Jagr (Dallas Stars) scored is 1,000th assist in a game against the Minnesota Wild. He was the 12th NHL player to reach 1,000 points and the first non-Canadian NHL player to reach the mark.

2015 - WrestleMania 31 is held in Santa Clara, California. The main event saw Seth Rollins defeat Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns to win the WWE Championship.
