1513 - Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sighted present-day Florida.

1625 - Charles I acceded to the English throne upon the death of James I.

1794 - Congress authorized the construction of six frigates, including the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"), for the U.S. Navy.

1866 - President Andrew Johnson vetoed a civil rights bill which would later become the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

1884 - The first long-distance telephone call was made, between Boston and New York.

1912 - First lady Helen Herron Taft and the wife of Japan’s ambassador to the United States, Viscountess Chinda, planted the first two of 3,000 cherry trees given to the U.S. as a gift by the mayor of Tokyo.

1945 - During World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower told reporters in Paris that German defenses on the Western Front had been broken.

1958 - Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet premier and first secretary of the Communist Party.

1964 - A 9.2-magnitude earthquake hit 80 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska, killing 117 people and producing a 50-foot high tsunami that traveled over 8,000 miles.

1968 - Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man to orbit the Earth in 1961, died when his MiG-15 jet crashed during a routine training flight near Moscow; he was 34.

1973 - “The Godfather” won the Academy Award for best picture of 1972, but its star, Marlon Brando, refused to accept his Oscar for best actor. Liza Minnelli won best actress for “Cabaret.”

1975 - Construction began on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which was completed two years later.

1977 - In aviation’s worst disaster, 583 people were killed when a KLM Boeing 747, attempting to take off in heavy fog, crashed into a Pan Am 747 on an airport runway on the Canary Island of Tenerife.

1980 - 123 workers died when a North Sea floating oil field platform, the Alexander Kielland, capsized during a storm.

2001 - A federal judge ruled that the University of Michigan's affirmative action policy was invalid, a ruling that would later be reversed in an appeal.

2013 - Lawyers for Colorado theater mass shooting suspect James Holmes said he would plead guilty to the attack that killed 12 people and serve the rest of his life in prison to avoid the death penalty. (Prosecutors rejected the offer, but Holmes ended up being sentenced to life in prison anyway.)

2019 - Facebook said it was extending its ban on hate speech to prohibit the promotion and support of white nationalism and white separatism.

2022 - “CODA” won best picture at an Oscars ceremony marred by Will Smith’s on-stage slap of Chris Rock. Smith would go on to win best actor minutes later. (Smith was later expelled from the movie academy received a 10-year ban from the Oscars.)

1917 - The Seattle Metropolitans (of the Pacific Coast League) became the first U.S. hockey team to win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Montreal Canadiens.

1939 - Oregon defeats Ohio State 46-33 to win the inaugural NCAA men's basketball tournament.

1945 - Oklahoma State defeats NYU 49-44 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1951 - Kentucky defeats Kansas 68-58 to win the NCAA Tournament, the first tournament expanded to 16 teams.

1971 - UCLA defeats Villanova 68-62 to win a fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament.

1978 - Kentucky defeats Duke 94-88 to win the NCAA Tournament.

1988 - WrestleMania IV is held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The main event saw "Macho Man" Randy Savage defeat "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase in a tournament final to win the vacant WWF championship.

1989 - Sport Illustrated exposed Pete Rose's gambling activities. The magazine article alleged Rose bet on baseball from the Riverfront dugout using hand gestures with an associate.

1994 - Magic Johnson became head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He coached the final 16 games of the 1993-94 season.

1998 - The Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks square off at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, drawing an NBA-record 62,046 fans.

2007 - NFL owners voted 30-2 to make the video replay system a permanent officiating tool.
