1836 - Texas declared its independence from Mexico.

1861 - Texas was admitted to the Confederacy during the Civil War.

1877 - Rutherford B. Hayes was declared president by a U.S. electoral commission since the original result was too close to call. (He was the only president ever selected in this manner.)

1917 - Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory and Puerto Ricans gained American citizenship.

1923 - The first issue of TIME magazine was published.

1932 - The 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which moved the date of the presidential inauguration from March 4 to Jan. 20, was passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification.

1933 - "King Kong," starring Fay Wray, premiered in New York City.

1943 - The three-day Battle of the Bismarck Sea began in the southwest Pacific during World War II; U.S. and Australian warplanes were able to inflict heavy damage on an Imperial Japanese convoy.

1949 - Capt. James Gallagher completed the first non-stop around-the-world flight. The 23,452-mile trek was completed in 94 hours, 1 minute.

1955 - Nine months before Rosa Parks’ famous act of defiance, Claudette Colvin, a Black high school student in Montgomery, Alabama, was arrested after refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white passenger.

1956 - Morocco gained independence from France.

1985 - The government approved a screening test for AIDS that detected antibodies to the virus, allowing possibly contaminated blood to be excluded from the blood supply.

1989 - Representatives from the 12 European Community nations agreed to ban all production of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), the synthetic compounds blamed for destroying the Earth’s ozone layer, by the end of the 20th century.

1990 - More than 6,000 drivers went on strike against Greyhound Lines Inc. (The company, later declaring an impasse in negotiations, fired the strikers.)

1995 - The Internet search engine website Yahoo! was incorporated by founders Jerry Yang and David Filo.

2001 - The Taliban began the destruction of ancient Buddha statues in Afghanistan.

2008 - Dmitiri A. Medvedev, a former aide to Russian president Vladimir Putin who had never held elected office, won the Russian presidential election in a landslide. Putin remained in a position of power, serving as Medvedev's prime minister.

2011 - The Supreme Court ruled, 8-1, that a grieving father’s pain over mocking protests at his Marine son’s funeral had to yield to First Amendment protections for free speech in a decision favoring the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas.

2012 - Some 40 people were killed by tornadoes that struck Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

2013 - The day after $85 billion in across-the-board federal spending cuts went into effect, President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans refused to concede any culpability for failing to stave off the sequester.

2022 - Russian forces laid siege to two strategic Ukrainian seaports and pressed their bombardment of the country’s second-biggest city, while the huge armored column threatening Kyiv appeared to be stalled outside the capital. Moscow’s isolation deepened as most of the world lines up against it at the United Nations.

1904 - The "Official Playing Rules of Professional Base Ball Clubs" were adopted.

1918 - Joe Malone (Toronto Arenas) became the first scoring leader in the NHL. He had scored 44 goals in 22 games in the first NHL season. His record stood until 1944-45 when 50 goals were scored by Maurice "The Rocket" Richard.

1922 - The Toronto St. Patricks and the Vancouver Millionaires played the final professional hockey game that featured seven players on each side.

1927 - Babe Ruth signed a 3-year contract with the New York Yankees worth $70,000 a year.

1962 - Philadelphia Warriors center Wilt Chamberlain established an NBA single game scoring record with 100 points in a game against the New York Knicks.

1969 - Phil Esposito (Boston Bruins) became the first player in the NHL to score 100 points in a season. Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe also crossed the 100 mark during the same season.

2000 - St. Louis Blues become just the 2nd team in NHL history to win 10 straight games on the road, with a 5-2 victory in Atlanta; tie mark set by Buffalo 1983-84.

2004 - The Indianapolis Colts signed Peyton Manning to a seven-year, $98 million deal with a $34.5 million signing bonus. It was the largest package to date in the NFL.

2012 - Major League Baseball confirms the postseason will be expanded from 8 to 10 teams, with an extra wild card team in each league.

2012 - NFL establishes existence of a bounty program at the New Orleans Saints 2009-11; players given incentives to injure opposition; coach Sean Payton is suspended for 2012 season.

2019 - Roger Federer wins his 100th ATP Tour title.
