1743 - The first town hall meeting was held in Boston at Faneuil Hall.

1794 - The cotton gin was patented by Eli Whitney.

1879 - Physicist Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany.

1883 - Political philosopher Karl Marx died at age 64.

1900 - Congress ratified the Gold Standard Act.

1939 - The Republic of Czechoslovakia was dissolved, soon to be occupied by the Nazis.

1950 - The FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list made its debut.

1951 - United Nations forces recaptured Seoul during the Korean War.

1958 - Perry Como's single "Catch a Falling Star" became the first RIAA gold record.

1962 - Democrat Edward M. Kennedy officially launched in Boston his successful candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat from Massachusetts once held by his brother, President John F. Kennedy. (Edward Kennedy served in the Senate for nearly 47 years.)

1964 - A jury in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, and sentenced him to death. (Both the conviction and death sentence were overturned, but Ruby died before he could be retried.)

1967 - President John F. Kennedy's body was moved from a temporary grave to a permanent memorial site at Arlington National Cemetery.

1990 - The Soviet Congress voted Mikhail Gorbachev into the newly-created and powerful position of president.

1995 - American astronaut Norman Thagard became the first American to enter space aboard a Russian rocket as he and two cosmonauts blasted off aboard a Soyuz spacecraft, headed for the Mir space station.

2004 - Opposition Socialists scored a dramatic upset win in Spain's general election, unseating conservatives stung by charges they'd provoked the Madrid terror bombings by supporting the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

2004 - Russian President Vladimir Putin captured more than 70 percent of the vote to win a second term in an election that European observers said fell short of democratic standards.

2005 - A judge in San Francisco ruled that California's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional.

2005 - About 1 million people rallied in Beirut, Lebanon, demanding Syrian withdrawal and the arrest of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's killers.

2008 - Protests led by Buddhist monks in Tibet turned violent, leading to an extensive crackdown by China's military.

2011 - Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Darlene Love, Dr. John and Leon Russell were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2015 - Robert Durst, a wealthy eccentric linked to two killings and his wife’s disappearance, was arrested by the FBI in New Orleans on a murder warrant a day before HBO aired the final episode of a serial documentary about his life. (Durst would be convicted in the shooting death of his friend, Susan Berman; he died in January 2022 while serving a life sentence in California.)

2018 - Stephen Hawking, the best-known theoretical physicist of his time, died at his home in Cambridge, England, at the age of 76; he had stunned doctors by living with the normally fatal illness ALS for more than 50 years.

2021 - U.S. authorities arrested and charged two men with assaulting U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick with bear spray during the Jan. 6 riot. (Sicknick collapsed and died at a hospital the next day; a medical examiner determined that he suffered a stroke and died from natural causes.)

2021 - Female performers including Beyoncé and Taylor Swift swept the top honors at the Grammy Awards; Beyoncé’s 28th win made her the most decorated woman in Grammy history.

1954 - Future home run king Hank Aaron hits a home run in his debut exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox.

1956 - 50-year-old pitching legend Satchel Paige signs a contract to play for and manage the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League.

1960 - Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA playoff game record with 53 points in the Warriors' 132-112 win over the Syracuse Nationals.

1962 - Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings becomes the second player in NHL history to score 500 career goals.

1972 - The NBA's Cincinnati Royals, plagued by poor home attendance, announce a move to Kansas City.

1978 - The NFL permanently adds a seventh official (side judge).

1980 - A LOT Polish Airlines jet crashed while attempting to land in Warsaw, killing all 87 people aboard, including 22 members of a U.S. amateur boxing team.

2017 - Mitch Seavey won his third Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, becoming the fastest and oldest champion at age 57.

2021 - Record-setting New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced his retirement after 20 NFL seasons.
