1743 - The first town meeting was held in Boston, at Faneuil Hall.

1794 - The cotton gin was patented by Eli Whitney.

1900 - Congress ratified the Gold Standard Act.

1939 - The Republic of Czechoslovakia was dissolved, soon to be occupied by the Nazis.

1950 - The FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list made its debut.

1951 - United Nations forces recaptured Seoul during the Korean War.

1958 - Perry Como's single "Catch a Falling Star" became the first RIAA gold record.

1962 - Democrat Edward M. Kennedy officially launched in Boston his successful candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat from Massachusetts once held by his brother, President John F. Kennedy. (Edward Kennedy served in the Senate for nearly 47 years.)

1964 - Jack Ruby was found guilty of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, the alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy, and was sentenced to death. (Both the conviction and death sentence were overturned, but Ruby died before he could be retried.)

1965 - Israel’s cabinet formally approved establishment of diplomatic relations with West Germany.

1967 - President John F. Kennedy's body was moved from a temporary grave to a permanent memorial site at Arlington National Cemetery.

1990 - The Soviet Congress voted Mikhail Gorbachev into the newly-created and powerful position of president.

2004 - Opposition Socialists scored a dramatic upset win in Spain's general election, unseating conservatives stung by charges they'd provoked the Madrid terror bombings by supporting the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

2004 - Russian President Vladimir Putin captured more than 70 percent of the vote to win a second term in an election that European observers said fell short of democratic standards.

2005 - A judge in San Francisco ruled that California's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional.

2005 - About 1 million people rallied in Beirut, Lebanon, demanding Syrian withdrawal and the arrest of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's killers.

2008 - Protests led by Buddhist monks in Tibet turned violent, leading to an extensive crackdown by China's military.

2011 - Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Darlene Love, Dr. John and Leon Russell were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2020 - President Donald Trump expanded a ban on travel from European countries, adding Britain and Ireland to the list.

1956 - Fifth-year-old pitching star Satchel Paige signs a contract to play for and maage the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro National League.

1960 - Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA playoff record with 53 points in the Philadelphia Warriors' 132-112 win over the Syracuse Nationals.

1962 - Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings becomes the second player in NHL history to score 500 career goals.

1962 - Wilt Chamberlain (Philadelphia Warriors) played every minute of a game for the 47th consecutive time. The streak ended during the Warriors' next game.

1967 - The AFL and the NFL held the first common draft. The two leagues merged in 1970. The first player chosen was Bubba Smith, a defensive lineman from Michigan State.

1972 - The Cincinnati Royals of the National Basketball Association announced that the team's franchise would be moved to Kansas City, Missouri at the end of the season.

2005 - Major League Baseball gave a congressional committee about 400 pages of documents related to drug testing. It was also reported that Bud Selig would be willing to testify in hearings planned for March 17.

2017 - Muirfield in Scotland, the world's oldest golf club, votes to admit women as members for the first time in their 273-year history.
