1496 - Christopher Columbus concluded his second visit to the Western Hemisphere as he left Hispaniola for Spain.

1629 - King Charles I of England dissolved Parliament and ruled alone for the next 11 years.

1785 - Thomas Jefferson is appointed minister to France, succeeding Benjamin Franklin.

1848 - Congress ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican War.

1864 - Ulysses S. Grant became commander of Union armies during the Civil War.

1876 - The first telephone call was made by Alexander Graham Bell.

1913 - Former slave, abolitionist and Underground Railroad "conductor" Harriet Tubman died in Auburn, New York.

1948 - The body of Jan Masaryk, Czechoslovakia's anti-Communist foreign minister was found. Officially ruled a suicide, the real cause of death has never been proven.

1957 - Terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia.

1969 - James Earl Ray was sentenced in Memphis, Tennessee to 99 years in prison for the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. in April 1968.

1985 - Konstantin U. Chernenko, Soviet leader for just 13 months, died at age 73; he was succeeded by Politburo member Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

1993 - Dr. David Gunn was shot to death outside a Pensacola, Florida abortion clinic.

2004 - Teenage sniper Lee Boyd Malvo was sentenced in Chesapeake, Virginia to life in prison for his role in the Washington, D.C. area shootings.

2008 - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer apologized after allegations surfaced that he had paid thousands of dollars for a high-end call girl, a scandal which ultimately led to his resignation.

2015 - Breaking her silence in the face of a growing controversy over her use of a private email address and server, Hillary Rodham Clinton conceded that she should have used government email as secretary of state but insisted she had not violated any federal laws or Obama administration rules.

2020 - Clusters of the coronavirus swelled on both U.S. coasts, with more than 70 cases linked to a biotech conference in Boston and infections turning up at 10 nursing homes in the Seattle area. Infections in Italy topped the 10,000 mark, as authorities enforced a sweeping nationwide lockdown.

1920 - Joe Malone (Quebec Bulldogs) scored 6 goals in a game against the Ottawa Senators.

1941 - The Brooklyn Dodgers announced that their players would begin wearing batting helmets during the 1941 season.

1963 - Wilt Chamberlain of the San Francisco Warriors scores 70 points against the Syracuse Nationals.

1985 - Dallas Mavericks coach Dick Motta becomes the fourth in NBA history to win 700 games.

1991 - Eddie Sutton becomes the first Division I men's basketball coach to lead four different teams to the NCAA Tournament.

1993 - Sherry Davis became the first woman to be the PA voice of a major league team. She was the public address announcer for the San Francisco Giants.

2002 - ESPN aired "A Season on the Brink." It was the first original motion picture by ESPN. The movie was about Bobby Knight.

2004 - Todd Bertuzzi (Vancouver Canucks) held a press conference to apologize for hitting Steve Moore (Colorado Avalanche) in the side of the head from behind and driving his head into the ice in a game on March 8. Moore landed face-first with Bertuzzi on top of him. Moore suffered a broken neck, a concussion and deep cuts on his face. On March 11, the NHL suspended Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs and announced that his eligibility would be assessed the following season and would take into account Moore's health and the progression of his recovery.
