1732 - James Oglethorpe received a charter from Britain's King George II to found the colony of Georgia.

1870 - Author Charles Dickens died.

1898 - China agreed to lease Hong Kong to Britain for 99 years.

1934 - Donald Duck made his on-screen debut in The Wise Little Hen.

1940 - During World War II, Norway decided to surrender to the Nazis, effective at midnight.

1944 - The Republic of Iceland was established.

1954 - During the Senate Army-McCarthy hearings, Army special counsel Joseph N. Welch berated Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy, R-Wis., asking: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

1969 - The Senate confirmed Warren Burger to be the new chief justice of the United States, succeeding Earl Warren.

1972 - Heavy rains triggered record flooding in the Black Hills of South Dakota; the resulting disaster left at least 238 people dead and caused more than $165 million in damage.

1978 - After 148 years, the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints finally allowed Black men to become priests.

1983 - Britain's Conservatives, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, won a decisive election victory.

1986 - The Rogers Commission released its report on the space shuttle Challenger disaster, criticizing NASA and rocket-builder Morton Thoikol for management problems leading to the explosion that killed seven astronauts.

1993 - The science-fiction film "Jurassic Park" directed Steven Spielberg, had its world premiere in Washington, D.C.

1993 - Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito married commoner Masako Owada.

2004 - The body of former President Ronald Reagan arrived in Washington, D.C. to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda before his funeral.

2013 - Risking prosecution by the U.S. government, 29-year-old intelligence analyst Edward Snowden was revealed as the source of The Guardian and The Washington Post disclosures about secret American surveillance programs.

2022 - At its first public hearing on the matter, the House panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, laid the blame firmly on Donald Trump, saying the assault was not spontaneous but an "attempted coup" and a direct result of the defeated president's effort to overturn the 2020 election. The hearing included a never-before-seen 12-minute video of extremist groups leading the deadly siege and startling testimony from Trump's most inner circle.

1914 - Honus Wagner became the second player in major league history to record 3,000 hits.

1966 - The Minnesota Twins set a major league record when they hit six home runs in one inning.

1973 - Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes and became horse racing's first Triple Crown winner in 25 years; he won the race by a record 31 lengths and ran the 1 1/2 miles in a record time of 2:24.

1984 - The Pittsburgh Penguins used their fist pick overall to select Mario Lemieux in the NHL Entry Draft.

1985 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in six games to win the NBA championship.

1990 - Monica Seles became the youngest winner in French Open history when she beat Steffi Graf.

1993 - The Montreal Canadiens won their 24th Stanley Cup, defeating the Los Angeles Kings in five games.

1994 - Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes (TLC) set fire to her boyfriend's house. Her boyfriend was Andre Rison of the Atlanta Falcons.

1996 - Ryan Hancock became the first California Angel pitcher to get a hit in 24 years. Nolan Ryan was the previous pitcher to get a hit for the Angels in 1972.

2001 - The Colorado Avalanche defeat the New Jersey Devils in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.

2003 - The New Jersey Devils won the Stanley Cup after defeating the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4 games to 3. Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils) became the first goaltender to produce 7 playoff shutouts in a single-season.

2008 - Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds becomes the sixth player in MLB history with 600 career home runs, joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa.

2010 - The Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to win their first Stanley Cup since 1961.

2013 - Rafael Nadal became the first man to win eight titles at the same Grand Slam tournament after beating fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the French Open final.

2018 - Justify won the Belmont Stakes to become horse racing's 13th Triple Crown winner and the second in a four-year span.

2022 - The controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series gets underway at the Centurion Club, Hertfordshire; the PGA suspends 17 participating players.
