1836 - James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, died at his Montpelier, Virginia estate.

1838 - Britain's Queen Victoria was crowned at Westminster Abbey.

1863 - During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Maj. Gen. George G. Meade the new commander of the Army of the Potomac, following the resignation of Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker.

1894 - Labor Day became a federal holiday.

1914 - Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, setting off World War I.

1919 - The Treaty of Versailles was signed in France, bringing World War I to an end.

1939 - Pan American Airways began regular trans-Atlantic air service with a flight that departed New York for Marseilles, France.

1940 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Alien Registration Act, also known as the Smith Act, which required adult foreigners residing in the U.S. to be registered and fingerprinted.

1950 - North Korean forces captured Seoul, the capital of South Korea, during the Korean War.

1978 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke that the use of quotas in affirmative action programs was not permissible.

1994 - President Bill Clinton became the first president in U.S. history to set up a personal legal defense fund and ask Americans to contribute to it.

1996 - The Citadel, the state military college of South Carolina, voted to admit women.

2000 - Elian Gonzalez was returned to his father in Cuba.

2001 - Serbia handed over Slobodan Milosevic to the U.N. war crimes tribunal.

2004 - The United States transferred power back to the Iraqis, two days earlier than planned.

2010 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled, 5-4, that Americans had the right to own a gun for self-defense anywhere they lived.

2012 - The Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's signature piece of legislation, narrowly survived, 5-4, an election-year battle at the U.S. Supreme Court with the improbable help of conservative Chief Justice John Roberts.

2017 - A man armed with a shotgun attacked a newspaper in Annapolis, Md., killing four journalists and a staffer before police stormed the building and arrested him; authorities said Jarrod Ramos had a long-running grudge against the newspaper for its reporting of a harassment case against him. (Ramos was convicted and was given more than five life terms without the possibility of parole.)

2019 - Avowed white supremacist James Alex Fields, who deliberately drove his car into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing a young woman and injuring dozens, apologized to his victims before being sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges.

2022 - Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping the wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls.

1907 - The Washington Senators steal a MLB record 13 bases against the New York Highlanders (Yankees).

1957 - MLB commissioner Ford Frick overrules fan voting due to ballot stuffing in Cincinnati and names Stan Musial, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron to the All-Star Team.

1971 - The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overturns the draft evasion conviction of Muhammad Ali.

1973 - The Black Sports Hall of Fame is formed, with an initial class of inductees including Paul Robeson, Elgin Baylor, Jesse Owens, Jim Brown, Wilma Rudolph, Joe Louis and Althea Gibson.

1992 - The U.S. men's national basketball team, known as the "Dream Team," wins their first exhibition game 133-57 over Cuba.

1995 - The Golden State Warriors select Maryland forward Joe Smith with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

1997 - Boxer Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear during their heavyweight title fight, earning a 16-month suspension.

2000 - The New Jersey Nets select Cincinnati forward Kenyon Martin with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2005 - The Milwaukee Bucks select Utah center Andrew Bogut with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2006 - The Toronto Raptors select Italian power forward Andrea Bargnani with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2007 - Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros becomes the 27th player in MLB history to record 3,000 career hits.

2007 - The Portland Trailblazers select Ohio State center Greg Oden with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2012 - The New Orleans Pelicans select Kentucky center Anthony Davis with the first pick in the NBA Draft.

2023 - New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German throws the 24th perfect game in MLB history in an 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics.
