1611 - English explorer Henry Hudson, his son and several other people were set adrift in present-day Hudson Bay by mutineers aboard the Discovery.

1815 - Napoleon abdicated his throne for the second time after his defeat at Waterloo.

1868 - Arkansas was readmitted to the Union.

1870 - The federal Department of Justice was created.

1874 - Dr. Andrew Still became the first to practice osteopathy.

1940 - During World War II, Adolf Hitler gained a stunning victory as France was forced to sign an armistice eight days after German forces overran Paris.

1941 - Germany invaded the Soviet Union during World War II.

1943 - W.E.B. DuBois became the first black member of the National Institute of Letters.

1944 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the G.I. Bill of Rights, authorizing a broad package of benefits for World War II veterans.

1945 - The World War II battle for Okinawa ended; 12,520 Americans and 110,000 Japanese were killed in the 83-day campaign.

1969 - Singer-actress Judy Garland died at age 47.

1970 - President Richard Nixon signed a measure lowering the voting age to 18.

1977 - Former Attorney General John N. Mitchell began serving a sentence for his role in the Watergate cover-up. (He was released 19 months later.)

1981 - Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty to killing rock musician John Lennon.

1987 - Actor-dancer-singer Fred Astaire died.

1992 - The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that hate-crime laws that ban cross-burning and similar expressions of racial bias violate free-speech rights.

1993 - Former first lady Pat Nixon died at age 81.

2009 - Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of the reality TV series "Jon & Kate Plus 8," announced plans to divorce.

2011 - President Barack Obama announced he would pull home 33,000 troops from Afghanistan by the following summer.

2011 - James “Whitey” Bulger, the longtime fugitive Boston crime boss and fixture on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list, was arrested in Santa Monica, California.

2016 - Rebellious Democrats launched a 25-hour round-the-clock sit-in on the House floor to demand votes on gun-control bills, forcing exasperated Republicans to recess while cutting off cameras showing the protest.

2016 - Dennis Hastert arrived at a Minnesota prison to serve his 15-month sentence in a hush-money case involving revelations that the former House speaker had sexually abused at least four boys when he coached wrestling at an Illinois high school.

2020 - Protesters tried to pull down a statue of President Andrew Jackson near the White House before being dispersed by police.

2020 - President Donald Trump opened a new front in his fight against mail-in voting, making unsubstantiated assertions that foreign countries would print millions of bogus ballots to rig the results.

1937 - Joe Louis began his reign as world heavyweight boxing champion by knocking out Jim Braddock in the eighth round of their fight in Chicago. (A year later on this date, Louis knocked out Max Schmeling in the first round of their rematch at Yankee Stadium.)

1938 - Heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis knocked out Max Schmeling of Germany in the first round of their rematch in New York City's Yankee Stadium.

1979 - The NHL expanded to 21 teams by accepting four former World Hockey Association (WHA) franchises: Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and the Winnipeg Jets.

1982 - Pete Rose collects his 3,772nd career hit, moving past Hank Aaron into second place on the all-time list.

1986 - Diego Maradona scored both goals in Argentina's 2-1 World Cup quarterfinal victory over England in Mexico City – including one that he punched in, unseen by the referee. When asked about the play later, Maradona said, "It was the hand of God."

1990 - Bobby Cox is named manager of the Atlanta Braves.

1994 - The Houston Rockets defeat the New York Knicks in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1994 - The U.S. men's national soccer team defeats Colombia 2-1 to secure their first World Cup victory since 1950.

2003 - Michelle Wie won her first USGA title at the age of 13. She was the youngest person to win any adult USGA event.

2016 - Chicago’s Patrick Kane won the Hart Trophy, becoming the first player born and trained in the U.S. to be named the NHL’s most valuable player.

2016 - The NHL Board of Governors voted to expand with a 31st franchise, with the Vegas Golden Knights to begin play in the 2017-18 season.
