1775 - The Battle of Bunker Hill took place during the Revolutionary War, resulting in a costly British victory, who suffered heavy losses.

1885 - The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City aboard the French ship Isere.

1928 - Amelia Earhart embarked on the first trans-Atlantic flight by a woman.

1930 - President Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which boosted U.S. tariffs to historically high levels, prompting foreign retaliation.

1944 - The Republic of Iceland was established.

1963 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that no locality may require recitation of the Lord's Prayer or Bible verses in public schools.

1967 - China successfully tested its first thermonuclear (hydrogen) bomb.

1972 - Burglary of Democratic Party headquarters in Washington, D.C. started the Watergate political scandal that would ultimately end in the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon.

1994 - After leading police on a slow-speed chase on Southern California freeways, O.J. Simpson was arrested and charged with murder in the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. (Simpson was later acquitted in a criminal trial but held liable in a civil trial.)

2009 - President Barack Obama extended some benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees.

2013 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that states can't demand proof of citizenship from people registering to vote in federal elections unless they get federal or court approval to do so.

2015 - Nine people were shot to death in a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina; suspect Dylann Roof was arrested the following morning. (Roof was convicted of federal hate crimes and sentenced to death; he later pleaded guilty to state murder charges and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.)

2019 - Iran announced that it was breaking compliance with the international accord that kept it from making nuclear weapons; the announcement meant that Iran could soon start to enrich uranium to just a step away from weapons-grade levels. The Trump administration followed Iran's announcement by ordering 1,000 more troops to the Middle East.

2020 - Prosecutors in Atlanta brought murder charges against white police officer Garrett Rolfe in the fatal shooting of a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, following a struggle; a second officer, Devin Brosnan, was charged with aggravated assault and violating his oath. (Both officers are awaiting trial.)

1880 - Providence Grays MLB pitcher John M. Ward throws a perfect game beating the Buffalo Bisons, 5-0; second perfect game in National League in 6 days; next one takes 84 years.

1960 - Ted Williams hit his 500th career home run.

1971 - Don Kessinger (Chicago Cubs) went 6-6 at the plate against St. Louis.

1976 - The NBA and ABA announced their plans to merge with the Nets, Pacers, Nuggets, and Spurs moving into the NBA.

1992 - The Philadelphia 76ers trade Charles Barkley to the Phoenix Suns.

1995 - The New Jersey Devils set an NHL playoff record with nine road wins.

1997 - The NHL announces it will add franchises in Nashville (1998), Atlanta (1999), Minneapolis-St. Paul (2000) and Columbus, Ohio (2000).

2008 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in six games for their first NBA championship since 1986 and 17th overall.

2010 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Boston Celtics in seven games to win their 16th NBA championship.

2012 - Dale Earnhardt Jr. won at the Michigan International Speedway. It was his first win in four years and 143 races.

2018 - Brooks Koepka won the U.S. Open for the second straight year, becoming the seventh golfer to win the event back-to-back.

2022 - Vince McMahon stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE during an investigation into alleged misconduct involving the longtime leader and public face of the pro wrestling organization. (McMahon would return as a board member six months later.)
