1215 - England's King John sealed the Magna Carta.

1775 - George Washington was appointed head of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress.

1836 - Arkansas became the 25th state.

1844 - Charles Goodyear was granted a patent for rubber vulcanization.

1849 - James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States (1845-1849), died in Nashville, Tennessee at age 53.

1864 - Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton signed an order establishing a military burial ground, which became Arlington National Cemetery.

1904 - More than 1,000 people died when fire erupted aboard the steamboat General Slocum in New York City's East River.

1934 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an act making the National Guard part of the U.S. Army in the event of war or national emergency.

1944 - American forces began their successful invasion of Saipan during World War II; B-29 Superfortresses carried out their first raids on Japan.

1978 - King Hussein of Jordan married 26-year-old American Lisa Halaby, who became Queen Noor.

1985 - The Shiite Muslim hijackers of a TWA Boeing 727 beat and shot one of their hostages, U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem, 23, throwing him out of the plane to die on the tarmac at Beirut airport.

1991 - Mount Pinatubo in the northern Philippines exploded in one of the biggest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century, killing about 800 people.

1992 - Vice President Dan Quayle erroneously instructed a Trenton, New Jersey, elementary school student to spell potato as "potatoe" during a spelling bee.

1994 - Israel and the Vatican established full diplomatic relations.

1995 - During his murder trial, O.J. Simpson struggled to don a pair of gloves that prosecutors said were worn by the killer of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

1996 - Ella Fitzgerald, the "first lady of song," died in Beverly Hills, California at age 78.

2006 - Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said he would transition from day-to-day responsibilities at the company to concentrate on the charitable work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2007 - Bob Barker ended his 35-year run as host of the CBS game show "The Price is Right".

2012 - President Barack Obama eased enforcement of immigration laws as he announced a new policy, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

2020 - The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that a landmark civil rights law protects gay, lesbian and transgender people from discrimination in employment.

1923 - Lou Gehrig made his major league baseball debut as a pinch runner for the New York Yankees.

1938 - Johnny Vander Meer pitched his second consecutive no-hitter, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-0 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first night game at Ebbets Field, four days after leaving the Boston Bees hitless by a score of 3-0.

1963 - Juan Marichal (San Francisco) threw a no-hitter. It was the first Giants no-hitter since Carl Hubbell in 1929.

1980 - Jack Nicklaus won his fourth U.S. Open title and sets a tournament scoring record with a 272 (-8).

2001 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in five games to win their second straight NBA championship.

2003 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the New Jersey Nets in six games to win the NBA championship.

2004 - The Detroit Pistons defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship and complete one of the greatest upsets in NBA Finals history.

2005 - The New York Yankees announced plans for a new $800 million stadium. The plans called for the building to be next to Yankee Stadium and be ready by the 2009 season.

2011 - The Boston Bruins defeat the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to end a 39-year Stanley Cup title drought.

2014 - The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Miami Heat in five games to win their fifth NBA championship.

2015 - The Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games to in the Stanley Cup.

2019 - In a blockbuster NBA trade, the New Orleans Pelicans send forward Anthony Davis to the Los Angles Lakers for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and three future first-round draft picks, including the #4 pick in 2019.

2019 - A baseball jersey belonging to Babe Ruth becomes the most expensive sports memorabilia when it sells at an auction in New York City for $5.64 million.

2021 - Major League Baseball said pitchers would be ejected and suspended for 10 games for using illegal foreign substances to doctor baseballs; umpires would begin regular checks of all pitchers.
