1775 - The United States Army was founded.

1777 - The Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

1846 - A group of U.S. settlers in Sonoma proclaimed the Republic of California.

1919 - John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown embarked on the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean. (Flying a Vickers Vimy biplane bomber, they took off from St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada and arrived 16 1/2 hours later in Clifden, Ireland.)

1922 - Warren G. Harding became the first president heard on radio, as Baltimore station WEAR broadcast his speech dedicating the Francis Scott Key memorial at Fort McHenry.

1928 - The Republican National Convention nominated Herbert Hoover for president.

1940 - German troops entered Paris, France during World War II; on the same day, the Nazis opened the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.

1943 - The Supreme Court ruled schoolchildren could not be compelled to salute the flag of the United States if doing so would conflict with their religious beliefs.

1951 - The first commercial computer, Univac I, was unveiled.

1954 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the order inserting the words "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance.

1967 - California Gov. Ronald Reagan signed a bill liberalizing his state’s abortion law.

1972 - The Environmental Protection Agency ordered a ban on domestic use of the pesticide DDT, to take effect at year’s end.

1982 - Argentine forces surrendered to British troops on the Falkland Islands.

1985 - A 17-day hijack ordeal began when a pair of Lebanese Shiite Muslim extremists seized TWA Flight 847 shortly after takeoff from Athens, Greece.

1993 - President Bill Clinton nominated Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

2002 - American Roman Catholic bishops adopted a policy to bar sexually abusive clergy from face-to-face contact with parishioners but keep them in the priesthood.

2007 - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared an emergency after the Hamas militant group effectively took control of the Gaza Strip.

2017 - A rifle-wielding gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, wounding House Whip Steve Scalise and several others; the assailant died in a battle with police.

2021 - The Senate voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the nation’s second most powerful court, the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. (Jackson would win Senate confirmation to the Supreme Court in April 2022.)

1963 - Duke Snider (New York Mets) hit his 400th career home run.

1987 - The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in six games to win the NBA championship.

1990 - The Detroit Pistons defeated the Portland Trailblazers in five games to win their second straight NBA championship.

1992 - The Chicago Bulls defeated the Portland Trailblazers in six games to win their second consecutive NBA championship.

1994 - The New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to win their first Stanley Cup in 54 years.

1995 - The Houston Rockets defeat the Orlando Magic in four games to win the NBA championship.

1996 - Jeff Bagwell (Houston Astros) tied a major league baseball record when he hit four doubles. The Astros defeated the San Francisco Giants 9-1.

1996 - John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) tied a franchise record with his 13th consecutive win.

1998 - The Chicago Bulls defeat the Utah Jazz in six games to win their third consecutive NBA championship and sixth title in eight seasons.

2002 - The U.S. beat Mexico 2-0 and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals. It was the best showing in the World Cup for the U.S. since 1930.

2003 - The Frankfurt Galaxy became the first team in the NFL Europe League to win three World Bowls.

2004 - Jim Thome (Philadelphia Phillies) became the 37th player in major league history to reach 400 career home runs.

2005 - Michelle Wie, 15, became the first female player to qualify for an adult male U.S. Golf Association championship, tying for first place in a 36-hole U.S. Amateur Public Links sectional qualifying tournament.

2005 - The Detroit Pistons defeated the San Antonio Spurs 96-79 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. It was the first time in history that the first three games had been decided by 15 points or more.

2007 - The San Antonio Spurs sweep the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA championship.

2009 - Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson broke Red Auerbach's record by winning his 10th NBA championship after the Lakers defeat the Orlando Magic in five games; it was also the 15th championship in franchise history.
