1792 - Kentucky became the 15th state.

1796 - Tennessee became the 16th state.

1812 - President James Madison, in a message to Congress, recounted what he called Britain's "series of acts hostile to the United States as an independent and neutral nation"; Congress then ended up declaring war.

1813 - The mortally wounded commander of the USS Chesapeake, Capt. James Lawrence, gave the order, "Don't give up the ship" during a losing battle with the British frigate HMS Shannon during the War of 1812.

1868 - James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States, died near Lancaster, Pennsylvania at age 77.

1916 - Louis Brandeis took his seat as an associate justice of the US Supreme Court, the first Jewish American to serve on the nation’s highest bench.

1926 - Actress Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortensen in Los Angeles.

1938 - The first issue of Action Comics, which featured the debut of "Superman", was published.

1943 - A civilian flight from Portugal to England was shot down by Germany during World War II, killing all 17 people aboard, including actor Leslie Howard.

1958 - Gen. Charles De Gaulle became the premier of France, marking the end of the Fourth Republic.

1968 - Helen Keller, who earned a college degree despite being born blind and deaf and later became an accomplished author and lecturer, died in Westport, Connecticut at age 87.

1980 - The Cable News Network (CNN) made its debut.

2001 - Nepal's Crown Prince Dipendra went on a shooting spree, killing his father, mother, sister, brother and other members of the royal family before shooting himself.

2003 - Leaders of the world’s seven wealthiest nations and Russia pledged billions of dollars to fight AIDS and hunger on the opening day of their summit in Evian, France.

2009 - Air France Flight 447, an Airbus A330 carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean with the loss of everyone on board.

2009 - General Motors filed for Chapter 11, becoming the largest U.S. industrial company to enter bankruptcy protection.

2009 - Conan O'Brien debuted as host of NBC's "Tonight Show." (He stepped down in January of 2010 following a dispute with the network.)

2010 - Former Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, announced their separation after 40 years of marriage.

2011 - In a face-to-face meeting, GOP leaders complained to President Barack Obama that he had not produced a detailed plan of spending cuts and accused him of playing politics over Medicare; the White House said Obama had in fact led on the issue, and accused Republicans of trying to destroy the popular health care program for seniors.

2011 - Space shuttle Endeavour and its six astronauts returned to Earth, closing out the next-to-last mission in NASA’s 30-year program.

2015 - Vanity Fair released its cover photo featuring the former Bruce Jenner with the headline, “Call Me Caitlyn” as the Olympic gold medalist publicly completed a gender transition.

2017 - President Donald Trump declared he would pull the US from the landmark Paris climate agreement. (President Joe Biden signed an order returning the US to that accord on his first day in office.)

2020 - Police violently broke up a peaceful and legal protest by several thousand people in Lafayette Park across from the White House, using chemical agents, clubs and punches to send protesters fleeing; the protesters had gathered following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis a week earlier. President Donald Trump, after declaring himself “the president of law and order” and threatening to deploy the US military in a Rose Garden speech, then walked across the empty park to be photographed holding a Bible in front of St. John’s Church, which had been damaged a night earlier in a protest fire. A curfew failed to prevent another night of destruction in New York City; Macy’s flagship store was among those targeted when crowds smashed windows and looted businesses. A Minneapolis medical examiner classified George Floyd’s death as a homicide, saying his heart stopped as police restrained him and compressed his neck.

1918 - Chicago White Sox losing 5-4 against NY Yankees, load the bases in 9th with no outs; Chick Gandil lines to Frank Baker who turns a rare game winning triple play.

1925 - Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig's streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games began when he entered a game as a pinch hitter for the New York Yankees.

1938 - Baseball helmets were worn for the first time in the major leagues.

1941 - Mel Ott hit the 400th home run of his career. He also drove in his 1,500th career run.

1944 - Washington Senators outfielder Stan Spence goes 6-for-6 at the plate in an 11-5 win over the St. Louis Browns; collects 5 singles and a home run.

1975 - Nolan Ryan pitched his fourth career no-hitter in his 100th career victory.

1979 - The Seattle Supersonics defeat the Washington Bullets in five games to win the NBA championship and Seattle's first major professional sports championship.

1982 - Rickey Henderson of the Oakland Athletics becomes the fastest to record 50 stolen bases in a season.

1987 - Cleveland Indians pitcher Phil Niekro beats Detroit Tigers, 9-6 for his 314th MLB victory; combines with Joe Niekro (216) for most combined wins by brothers in baseball history (530)

1992 - The Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1993 - Dan Majerle of the Phoenix Suns sets a then NBA playoff record with eight 3-pointers during the Suns' 120-114 win over the Seattle Supersonics in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.

1994 - Indiana Pacers guard Reggie Miller set an NBA playoff record with five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter in a 93-86 win over the New York Knicks in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

2014 - The Los Angeles Kings beat the Chicago Blackhawks to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. It was the first time in NHL history that a team won a series in Game 7 on the road for the third consecutive series.

2016 - Ken Starr resigned as Baylor University’s chancellor, a week after the former prosecutor who had led the investigation of the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal was removed as the school’s president over its handling of sexual assault complaints against football players.

2019 - Mexican-American boxer Andy Ruiz Jr. produces a huge upset when he stops English champion Anthony Joshua in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden to win the IBF, WBO, IBO and WBA world heavyweight titles.
