1608 - Samuel de Champlain founded the city of Quebec.

1775 - Gen. George Washington took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

1863 - The three-day Civil War Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania ended in a major victory for the North as Confederate troops failed to breach Union positions during an assault known as Pickett’s Charge.

1890 - Idaho became the 43rd state.

1898 - The U.S. Navy defeated a Spanish fleet in the harbor at Santiago, Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

1913 - During a 50th anniversary reunion at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Civil War veterans re-enacted Pickett’s Charge, which ended with embraces and handshakes between the former enemies.

1930 - The U.S. Veterans Administration was created by Congress.

1944 - During World War II, Soviet forces recaptured Minsk from the Germans.

1950 - The first carrier strikes of the Korean War took place as the USS Valley Forge and the HMS Triumph sent fighter planes against North Korean targets.

1962 - Algeria became independent after 132 years of French rule.

1971 - Rock singer Jim Morrison of The Doors died in Paris at age 27.

1976 - Israel launched its daring mission to rescue 106 passengers and Air France crew members being held at Entebbe Airport in Uganda by pro-Palestinian hijackers; the commandos succeeded in rescuing all but four of the hostages.

1979 - Dan White, convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting deaths of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison. (He ended up serving five years.)

1986 - President Ronald Reagan presided over a ceremony in New York Harbor that saw the relighting of the renovated Statue of Liberty.

1988 - The USS Vincennes shot down an Iran Air jetliner over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 people aboard.

1996 - Russians went to the polls to re-elect Boris Yeltsin president over his Communist challenger, Gennady Zyuganov, in a runoff.

2001 - Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic refused to enter a plea on war crimes charges in his first appearance before a U.N. tribunal at The Hague.

2003 - The U.S. put a $25 million bounty on Saddam Hussein, and $15 million apiece for his two sons. (The $30 million reward for Odai and Qusai Hussein went to a tipster whose information led U.S. troops to their hideout, where the brothers were killed in a gunbattle.)

2005 - A NASA space probe, Deep Impact, hit its comet target as planned in a mission to learn how the solar system formed.

2009 - Sarah Palin announced she would resign as Alaska governor with 16 months left in her term.

2013 - Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi, was overthrown by the military after just one year by the same kind of Arab Spring uprising that had brought the Islamist leader to power.

2020 - Speaking at the foot of Mount Rushmore on the eve of Independence Day, President Donald Trump asserted that protesters pushing for racial justice were engaging in a “merciless campaign to wipe out our history.”

1912 - Rube Marquard of the New York Giants set a baseball pitching record when earned his 19th consecutive win.

1947 - The Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of Larry Doby from the Neward Eagles of the Negro National League. Doby became the first black player to play in the American League.

1962 - Jackie Robinson became the first African American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1966 - Tony Cloninger (Atlanta Braves) became the first National League pitcher to hit two grand slams in one game.

1983 - The Texas Rangers explode for MLB single extra innings record 12 runs in 15th inning of 16-4 win over the Oakland Athletics.

2001 - The National Basketball Association (NBA) owners unanimously approved to move the Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis for the 2001-02 season.

2004 - Maria Sharapova becomes the first Russian player to win a Wimbledon singles title with a victory over Serena Williams in the final.

2006 - Annika Sorenstam wins her 10th major after taking the U.S. Women's Open by four strokes.
