1533 - Pope Clement VII excommunicated England's King Henry VIII.

1767 - John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, was born in Braintree, Massachusetts.

1798 - The U.S. Marine Corps was formally re-established by a congressional act that also created the U.S. Marine Band.

1804 - Former Vice President Aaron Burr fatally wounded former treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton in a pistol duel near Weehawken, New Jersey. (Hamilton died the following afternoon.)

1859 - Big Ben, the great bell inside the famous London clock tower, chimed for the first time.

1864 - Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early and his troops attacked Washington, D.C. They retreated the next day, ending the Confederate threat to occupy the capital.

1936 - New York City's Triborough Bridge (now officially the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge) linking Manhattan, Queens and The Bronx, was opened to traffic.

1952 - The Republican National Convention, meeting in Chicago, nominated Dwight D. Eisenhower for president and Richard M. Nixon for vice president.

1955 - The United States Air Force Academy was dedicated and swore in its first class of cadets at its temporary quarters at Lowry Air Base in Colorado.

1960 - "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, was first published.

1972 - The World Chess Championships opened as grandmasters Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union began play in Reykjavik, Iceland. (Fischer won after 21 games.)

1977 - Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work to advance civil rights.

1979 - The abandoned U.S. space station Skylab made a spectacular return to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere and showering debris over the Indian Ocean and Australia.

1989 - Actor Laurence Olivier died in Steyning, West Sussex, England at age 82.

1995 - The U.N.-designated "safe haven" of Srebrenica in Bosnia-Herzegovina fell to Bosnian Serb forces, who then carried out the killings of more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys.

1995 - The United States and Vietnam established full diplomatic relations.

2007 - Former first lady Lady Bird Johnson died in Austin, Texas at age 94.

2011 - The News of the World, a British newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch, closes after several allegations that the paper's journalists hacked into voicemail accounts belonging to not only a 13-year-old murder victim, but also the relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2016 - Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that the United States would send 560 more troops to Iraq to transform a freshly retaken air base into a staging hub for a long-awaited battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State militants.

2020 - President Donald Trump wore a mask during a visit to a military hospital; it was the first time he had been seen in public with one.

1914 - Babe Ruth made his major league debut as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox.

1960 - In Honolulu, Hawaii, the first tournament held outside the continental U.S., sanctioned by the U.S. Golf Association, began.

1982 - Italy defeats West Germany 3-1 in Madrid, Spain to win the World Cup.

1985 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first major league pitcher to earn 4,000 strikeouts in a career.

1987 - Bo Jackson signed a contract to play football for the Los Angeles Raiders for 5 years. He was also continued to play baseball for the Kansas City Royals.

1994 - Shawn Eckardt was sentenced in Portland, Oregon, to 18 months in prison for his role in the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.

2010 - Spain defeats the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time to win the World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa.

2012 - Steve Nash is traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Los Angeles Lakers.

2015 - At age 33, Serena Williams becomes the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era.
