1896 - A German newspaper reported German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen's discovery of X-rays.

1914 - Henry Ford announced he would pay workers $5 for an 8-hour day, as opposed to $2.34 for a 9-hour day. (Employees still worked six days a week; the 5-day work week was instituted in 1926.)

1925 - Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first female governor in the United States, taking office in Wyoming, succeeding her late husband after a special election.

1933 - Construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge.

1943 - Educator and scientist George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery, died in Tuskegee, Alabama at age 80.

1949 - In his State of the Union address, President Harry S. Truman labeled his administration the "Fair Deal".

1957 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed assistance to countries to help them resist Communist aggression in what became known as the Eisenhower Doctrine.

1972 - President Richard Nixon ordered the development of the space shuttle.

1994 - Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, died in Boston at age 81.

1998 - Sonny Bono, the 1960s pop star-turned-politician, was killed when he struck a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort on the Nevada-California state line; he was 62.

2000 - INS Commissioner Doris Meissner ruled that 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez must be returned to Cuba.

2004 - Foreigners arriving at U.S. airports were photographed and had their fingerprints scanned in the start of a government effort to keep terrorists out of the country.

2011 - John Boehner was elected speaker as Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives.

2013 - President Barack Obama hailed a last-minute deal with Congress that pulled the country back from the “fiscal cliff,” but warned in his Saturday radio and Internet address that he would not compromise over his insistence that lawmakers lift the federal debt ceiling.

2018 - Former Fox News Channel anchor and 1989 Miss America Gretchen Carlson was named chairwoman of the Miss America Organization’s board of directors, with three other past pageant winners joining her on the board.

1920 - The New York Yankees purchased "Babe" Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000.

1927 - A three-day public hearing began on the charges that four major league baseball games played between Chicago and Detroit on September 2 and 3 of 1917 had been thrown.

1934 - Both the National and American baseball leagues decided to use a uniform-size baseball. It was the first time in 33 years that both leagues used the same size ball.

1964 - The San Diego Chargers defeated the Boston Patriots 51-10 in the AFL Championship Game.

1971 - The Harlem Globetrotters lose to the New Jersey Reds, 100-99, ending the Globetrotters' 2,495-game winning streak.

1983 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) scored his 100th point of the season. He achieved his 100th point in only the 42nd game of the season.

1991 - Kevin Bradshaw of U.S. International scores an NCAA Division I record 72 points in a game against Loyola Marymount, breaking Pete Maravich's record of 69 set in 1970.

1993 - Mike Ditka was fired as coach of the Chicago Bears.

1993 - Reggie Jackson is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1996 - Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula announces his retirement.

2007 - Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher announces his retirement.

2018 - In the first Rose Bowl game to to into overtime, Georgia advanced to the national championship game with a 54-48 win over Oklahoma; Alabama advanced by defeating top-ranked Clemson 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl.

2019 - The Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings combine for an NBA-record 41 3-pointers in the Warriors' 127-123 win.

2021 - Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith wins the Heisman Trophy.

2022 - Australia denied entry to tennis star Novak Djokovic, who was seeking to play for a 10th Australian Open title later in the month; authorities canceled his visa because he failed to meet the requirements for an exemption to COVID-19 vaccination rules. (Djokovic, a vocal skeptic of vaccines, would be confined to an immigration detention hotel as he began a court fight that eventually proved unsuccessful.)

2022 - After being held out of the team’s first 35 games because he refused to get vaccinated, Kyrie Irving scored 22 points for the Brooklyn Nets in his first game of the season as the team beat the Indiana Pacers 129-121 on the road; he was still unable to play in New York because of his vaccination status.
