1781 - A British naval expedition led by Benedict Arnold burned Richmond, Virginia.

1896 - A German newspaper reported that German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen had discovered X-rays.

1914 - Henry Ford of Ford Motor Co. announced he was going to pay workers $5 a day for an 8-hour-day, as opposed to $2.34 for a 9-hour-day. (Employees still worked six days a week; the five-day work week was instituted in 1926.)

1925 - Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first female governor of a state, succeeding her late husband, William, following a special election.

1933 - Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States, died in Northampton, Massachusetts at age 60.

1943 - Educator and scientist George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery, died in Tuskegee, Alabama, at about age 80.

1949 - In his State of the Union address, President Harry S. Truman labeled his domestic program the "Fair Deal".

1957 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed assistance to countries to help them resist Communist aggression in what became known as the Eisenhower Doctrine.

1970 - The soap opera "All My Children" premiered on ABC.

1972 - President Richard Nixon ordered the development of the space shuttle.

1981 - Police in England arrested Peter Sutcliffe, a truck driver later convicted of the "Yorkshire Ripper" murders of 13 women.

1983 - President Ronald Reagan announced he was nominating Elizabeth Dole to succeed Drew Lewis as secretary of transportation; Dole became the first woman to head a Cabinet department in Reagan’s administration, and the first to head the DOT.

1994 - Former House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill died in Boston at age 81.

2000 - INS Commissioner Doris Meissner ruled that 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez must be returned to Cuba.

2004 - Foreigners arriving at U.S. airports were photographed and had their fingerprints scanned in the start of a government effort to keep terrorists out of the country.

2011 - Rep. John Boehner of Ohio was elected Speaker of the House as Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives on the first day of the new Congress.

1925 - The New York Yankees purchased "Babe" Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000.

1927 - A three-day public hearing began on the charges that four major league baseball games played between Chicago and Detroit on September 2 and 3 of 1917 had been thrown.

1934 - Both the National and American baseball leagues decided to use a uniform-size baseball. It was the first time in 33 years that both leagues used the same size ball.

1960 - A third major professional baseball league, the Continental League, is proposed.

1964 - The San Diego Chargers defeat the Boston Patriots 51-10 in the AFL championship game.

1971 - The Harlem Globetrotters lose 100-99 to the New Jersey Reds, ending a 2,495-game winning streak.

1983 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) scored his 100th point of the season. He achieved his 100th point in only the 42nd game of the season.

1991 - Kevin Bradshaw of U.S. International scores a single-game NCAA Division I record 72 points in a 186-150 loss to Loyola Marymount, breaking Pete Maravich's old record of 69 set in 1970.

1993 - Reggie Jackson is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1993 - Mike Ditka is fired as head coach of the Chicago Bears.

2004 - After 14 years of denials, Pete Rose publicly admitted that he had bet on baseball while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

2007 - Bill Cowher resigns as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

2011 - Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2016 - With tears streaking his cheeks, President Barack Obama launched a final-year push to tighten sales of firearms in the U.S., using his presidential powers in the absence of tougher gun restrictions that Congress refused to pass, coming out with plans for expanded background checks and other modest measures.

2019 - The Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings combine for a record 41 3-pointers in the Warriors' 127-123 win.

2020 - President Donald Trump reiterated his view that cultural sites in Iran could be targeted if Iran were to retaliate for the drone strike that killed Iran’s top general; there were concerns even within his administration that doing so could constitute a war crime under international law. Amid heightened tensions over the killing of an Iranian general, Iran said it would no longer abide by the limits contained in the 2015 nuclear deal.
