1547 - King Henry VIII of England died and his nine-year-old son, Edward VI, assumed the throne.

1813 - The novel "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen was first published anonymously in London.

1871 - France surrendered in the Franco-Prussian War.

1909 - The United States ended direct control over Cuba.

1915 - Congress passed legislation creating the U.S. Coast Guard.

1916 - The first Jewish Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Louis Brandeis, was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson.

1922 - Ninety-eight people were killed when the roof of the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C., collapsed under the weight of nearly two feet of snow.

1945 - During World War II, Allied supplies began reaching China over the newly reopened Burma Road.

1956 - Elvis Presley made his first national TV appearance on “Stage Show,” a CBS program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey.

1973 - A cease-fire officially went into effect in the Vietnam War.

1980 - Six U.S. diplomats who had avoided being taken hostage at their embassy in Tehran flew out of Iran with the help of Canadian diplomats.

1982 - Italian anti-terrorism forces rescued U.S. Brig. Gen. James L. Dozier, 42 days after he had been kidnapped by the Red Brigades.

1986 - The space shuttle Challenger exploded 72 seconds after lift off, killing all seven crew members aboard, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe.

1999 - Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, honoring a personal request for mercy from Pope John Paul II, spared a triple murderer from execution.

2003 - President George W. Bush said in his State of the Union address that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had sought uranium from Africa. (The claim was later disputed by former ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had been asked by the CIA to investigate.)

2009 - In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a $819 billion stimulus bill.

2010 - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke won Senate confirmation for a second term.

2011 - Chaos engulfed Egypt as protesters seized the streets of Cairo, battling police, burning down the ruling party’s headquarters and defying a military curfew.

2017 - A federal judge in New York issued an emergency order temporarily barring the U.S. from deporting people from nations subject to President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

2020 - The United States and several other nations prepared to airlift citizens out of the Chinese city at the center of a virus outbreak that had killed more than 100 people.

2021 - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration confirmed that thousands more nursing home residents died of COVID-19 than the state’s official tallies had previously acknowledged.

1904 - The University of Chicago awarded blankets with the letter C to all seniors that played football during the 1903 season. This event marked the beginning of the sports letter tradition.

1922 - The Decatur Staleys football team relocated to Chicago and were renamed the Bears.

1959 - Vince Lombardi was named head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

1960 - The NFL announces new franchises in the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings.

1968 - Goose Goslin and Kiki Cuyler are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1990 - The San Francisco 49ers defeat the Denver Broncos 55-10 in New Orleans to win Super Bowl XXIV.

1992 - Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues joins Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games in back-to-back seasons.

1996 - The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Tempe, Arizona to win Super Bowl XXX.

2001 - The Baltimore Ravens defeat the New York Giants 34-7 in Tampa to win Super Bowl XXXV.

2003 - The WNBA announced that Connecticut had been awarded a franchise for the 2003 season. The team, the Connecticut Sun, was the first WNBA team to be owned by a non-NBA owner (the Mohegan Sun).

2020 - Serena Williams won her record 23rd Grand Slam singles title, defeating her sister Venus at the Australian Open.
