1706 - Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston.

1806 - James Madison Randolph, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson, became the first child born in the White House.

1893 - Hawaii's Queen Liliuokalani was forced to abdicate by a group of planters and businessmen.

1917 - Denmark ceded the Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million.

1944 - During World War II, Allied forces launched the first of four battles for Monte Cassino in Italy; the Allies were ultimately successful.

1945 - Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg disappeared in Hungary while in Soviet custody.

1950 - The Great Brink’s Robbery took place as seven masked men held up a Brink’s garage in Boston, stealing $1.2 million in cash and $1.5 million in checks and money orders. (Although the entire gang was caught, only part of the loot was recovered.)

1955 - The submarine USS Nautilus made its first nuclear-powered test run from its berth in Groton, Connecticut.

1961 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered his farewell address in which he warned against “the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.”

1977 - Convicted murderer Gary Gilmore, 36, was shot by a firing squad at Utah State Prison in the first U.S. execution in a decade.

1991 - The United States launched Operation Desert Storm to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait.

1994 - The 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake struck Southern California, killing at least 60 people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

1995 - More than 6,000 people were killed when an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 devastated the city of Kobe, Japan.

1998 - President Bill Clinton became the first sitting U.S. president to testify as a defendant in a criminal or civil suit.

2001 - Gov. Gray Davis declared a state of emergency concerning California's electricity crisis.

2016 - Iran released three Americans, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian and pastor Saeed Abedini, as part of a prisoner swap that also netted Tehran some $100 billion in sanctions relief.

2018 - A broad rally propelled the Dow Jones industrial average to close above 26,000 points for the first time.

2020 - U.S. health officials announced that they would begin screening airline passengers from central China for the new coronavirus; people traveling from Wuhan, China, would have their temperature checked and be asked about symptoms.

1916 - The Professional Golfers Association was formed in New York City.

1963 - Wilt Chamberlain (San Francisco Warriors) scored 67 points against Los Angeles.

1971 - The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 to win Super Bowl V.

1989 - Al Arbour won his 600th game as a coach in the NHL.

1995 - The Los Angeles Rams announced their intention to move to St. Louis.

1996 - Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings) became the 22nd player in NHL history to score 500 goals.

1999 - The Atlanta Falcons beat the Minnesota Vikings to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in team history.

2012 - LeBron James of the Miami Heat becomes the youngest player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points scored at age 28 years, 17 days. (Kobe Bryant had been the previous youngest at 29 years, 122 days.)

2013 - Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network broadcast the first of a two-part interview with Lance Armstrong, in which the disgraced cyclist told Winfrey he had started doping in the mid-1990s.

2018 - The rival Koreas agreed to form their first unified Olympic team and have their athletes parade together for the first time in 11 years during the opening ceremony of the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea.
