1562 - French Protestants were recognized under the Edict of St. Germain.

1706 - Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston.

1806 - James Madison Randolph, the grandson of Thomas Jefferson, became the first child born in the White House.

1893 - Hawaii's Queen Liliuokalani was forced to abdicate by a group of planters and businessmen.

1893 - Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th president of the United States, died in Fremont, Ohio at age 70.

1899 - Gangster Al Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York.

1917 - Denmark ceded the Virgin Islands to the United States for $25 million.

1945 - Soviet and Polish forces liberated Warsaw during World War II.

1945 - Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, credited with saving tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust, was taken into Soviet custody in Budapest, Hungary. (His fate has never been determined.)

1946 - The United Nations Security Council held its first meeting.

1950 - The Great Brink’s Robbery took place as seven masked men held up a Brink’s garage in Boston, stealing $1.2 million in cash and $1.5 million in checks and money orders. (Although the entire gang was caught, only part of the loot was recovered.)

1955 - The submarine USS Nautilus made its first nuclear-powered test run from its berth in Groton, Connecticut.

1961 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered his farewell address in which he warned against "the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."

1977 - Convicted murderer Gary Gilmore was shot by a firing squad at Utah State Prison in the first U.S. execution in a decade.

1994 - A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Southern California, killing at least 61 people and causing $20 billion worth of damage.

1995 - A magnitude 7.2 earthquake devastated the city of Kobe, Japan; more than 6,000 people were killed.

1997 - A court in Ireland granted the first divorce in the Roman Catholic country's history.

1998 - President Bill Clinton became the first U.S. president to testify as a defendant in a criminal or civil suit when he answered questions from lawyers for Paula Jones, who had accused Clinton of sexual harassment.

2001 - Gov. Gray Davis declared a state of emergency concerning California's electricity crisis.

2008 - Chess master Bobby Fischer died at age 64.

2016 - Iran released three Americans, former U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian and pastor Saeed Abedini, as part of a prisoner swap that also netted Tehran some $100 billion in sanctions relief.

2017 - President Barack Obama granted clemency to Chelsea Manning, allowing the transgender Army intelligence officer convicted of leaking more than 700,000 U.S. documents to go free nearly three decades early.

2020 - U.S. health officials announced that they would begin screening airline passengers from central China for the new coronavirus; people traveling from Wuhan, China, would have their temperature checked and be asked about symptoms.

1916 - The Professional Golfers Association was formed in New York City.

1963 - Wilt Chamberlain (San Francisco Warriors) scored 67 points against Los Angeles.

1971 - The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Miami to win Super Bowl V.

1989 - Al Arbour won his 600th game as a coach in the NHL.

1995 - The Los Angeles Rams announce their relocation to St. Louis.

1996 - Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings) became the 22nd player in NHL history to score 500 goals.

2012 - LeBron James of the Miami Heat becomes the youngest player in NBA history to reach the 20,000 career point milestone at 28 years and 17 days old. (Kobe Bryant had been the youngest to 20,000 points previously at 29 years, 122 days.)
