1776 - Thomas Paine anonymously published his influential pamphlet "Common Sense," which greatly influenced the authors of the Declaration of Independence.

1860 - The Pemberton Mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts, collapsed and caught fire, killing up to 145 people, mostly female workers from Scotland and Ireland.

1861 - Florida seceded from the Union.

1863 - The first underground passenger railway, the Metropolitan, opened in London.

1870 - John D. Rockefeller incorporated Standard Oil.

1901 - The Spindletop oil field in Beaumont, Texas, produced the Lucas Gusher, heralding the start of the Texas oil boom.

1917 - Legendary Western frontiersman and showman William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody died at his sister’s home in Denver at age 70.

1920 - The League of Nations came into existence.

1946 - The first General Assembly of the United Nations met in London.

1948 - Future country music star Loretta Lynn (nee Webb) married Oliver "Mooney" Lynn; she was 15 at the time and he was 21 (the marriage lasted until Oliver Lynn's death in 1996.)

1964 - The Beatles' first album in the United States, "Introducing the Beatles," was released.

1967 - The first African-American senator elected by popular vote, Edward Brooke of Massachusetts, took his seat.

1967 - President Lyndon B. Johnson, in his State of the Union address, asked Congress to impose a surcharge on both corporate and individual income taxes to help pay for his “Great Society” programs as well as the war in Vietnam.

1971 - "Masterpiece Theatre" premiered on PBS.

1984 - The U.S. and the Vatican re-established diplomatic relations after a 117-year break.

2000 - America Online agreed to buy Time-Warner for $162 billion. (Time-Warner decided to spin off AOL in 2009.)

2002 - Marines began flying hundreds of al-Qaida prisoners in Afghanistan to a U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

2003 - North Korea announced that it was withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

2005 - CBS issued a damning independent review of mistakes related to a "60 Minutes Wednesday" report on President George W. Bush's National Guard service.

2007 - President George W. Bush announced he would send a "surge" of 21,500 U.S. forces to Iraq.

2007 - The Democratic-controlled House voted 315-116 to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour.

2011 - A judge ordered former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to serve three years in prison for his role in a scheme to illegally funnel corporate money to Texas candidates in 2002. (DeLay’s conviction was ultimately overturned.)

2012 - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary.

2016 - David Bowie, the chameleon-like star who transformed the sound — and the look — of rock with his audacious creativity and his sexually ambiguous makeup and costumes, died in New York.

2020 - The Trump administration announced a new wave of sanctions on Iran following the missile strikes earlier in the week from Iran against U.S. bases in Iraq.

1957 - MLB Commissioner Ford Frick rules Bing Crosby can keep his share in the Detroit Tigers, even though he is part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1962 - The NFL entered into a single-network agreement with CBS for telecasting all regular-season games for $4.65 million annually.

1982 - In one of the most iconic moments in NFL playoff history, the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Dallas Cowboys 28-27 in the NFC Championship Game when tight end Dwight Clark made "the Catch", a fingertip reception from Joe Montana with 58 seconds remaining in the game.

1982 - The Cincinnati Bengals defeat the San Diego Chargers 27-7 in the AFC Championship Game dubbed the "Freezer Bowl" as temperatures were near 10 below zero with a wind chill of -37.

1986 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers scores his 34,000th career point.

1989 - Wayne Gretzky of the Los Angeles Kings becomes the NHL's all-time leading scorer in combined regular season & playoff points; 4 assists in 5-4 home win over Edmonton brings his total to 2,011, 1 more than Gordie Howe.

1990 - The NCAA approved a random drug testing program among college football players and harsh penalties for drug use.

1995 - NHL owners rejected the players unrestricted free agency proposal (one year at 32, five years at 31) and countered with three years at 32 and three at 31.

1998 - Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan wins his 600th career game.

2003 - NBA announces Charlotte, N.C. is awarded an NBA expansion franchise to be known as the Charlotte Bobcats and start play in 2004-05; eventually changes to the Charlotte Hornets for the 2014-15 season.

2011 - #1 Auburn defeated #2 Oregon 22-19 on a last second field goal to win the BCS National Championship.
