1825 - The House of Representatives elected John Quincy Adams to be president of the United States after no candidate received a majority of electoral votes.

1861 - Jefferson Davis was sworn in as the president of the Confederate States of America.

1942 - The U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff held its first formal meeting to coordinate military strategy during World War II.

1943 - The Battle of Guadalcanal ended with an American victory over the Japanese in World War II.

1950 - Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) claimed he had evidence there were card-carrying members of the Communist Party in the State Department.

1962 - An agreement was signed to make Jamaica an independent nation within the British Commonwealth later in the year.

1963 - The Boeing 727 went on its first-ever flight as it took off from Renton, Washington.

1964 - The Beatles made their first U.S. television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

1964 - The G.I. Joe action figure was introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

1971 - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in California’s San Fernando Valley claimed 65 lives.

1971 - The crew of Apollo 14 returned to Earth after man’s third landing on the moon.

1984 - Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov, 69, died 15 months after succeeding Leonid Brezhnev; he was followed by Konstantin U. Chernenko.

1986 - During its latest visit to the solar system, Halley’s Comet came closest to the sun (its next return will be in 2061).

1991 - Voters in Lithuania voted overwhelmingly for independence from the Soviet Union.

2001 - A U.S. nuclear sub struck the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishing boat.

2002 - Britain’s Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, died in London at age 71.

2018 - President Donald Trump signed a $400 billion budget deal that sharply boosted spending, swelling the federal deficit; the measure ended a brief overnight federal government shutdown.

2020 - “Parasite,” from South Korea, won the best picture Oscar, becoming the first foreign-language film to take home the biggest honor in film.

1895 - In Massachusetts, W.G. Morgan invented volleyball.

1895 - The first college basketball game was played as Minnesota State School of Agriculture defeated the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3.

1900 - Dwight F. Davis put up a new tennis trophy to go to the winner in matches against England. The trophy was a silver cup that weighed 36 pounds.

1924 - Frank Nighbor received the first NHL Hart Trophy. The award, that judges the most valuable player to his team, was the first individual award in the NHL.

1960 - A verbal agreement was reached between representatives of the American and National Football Leagues. Both agreed not to tamper with player contracts.

1980 - Rick Barry of the Houston Rockets becomes the first player in NBA history with eight 3-point shots in a single game.

1992 - Mike Gartner tied an NHL record when he reached the 30-goal mark for the 13th straight season. Only Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito had accomplished the feat.

2005 - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said that a deal between the league and the players' association would have to be in place before the end of the week to save the season.

2009 - New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs, telling ESPN he’d used banned substances while with the Texas Rangers for three years.

2018 - At the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, North and South Korean athletes entered Olympic Stadium together, waving flags showing a unified Korea; it was their first joint Olympic march in more than a decade.
